Utrogestan to Mirena
« on: November 08, 2024, 06:31:38 PM »

Hi everyone,
Hope you've had good weeks?

I'm due to have the mirena fitted on 19th Nov, currently I'm on 100mg of Utrogestan.
Not being doing great with the side effects - bags and dark circles under the eyes (might be due to more heavy sleep on this one) plus anxiety.
As someone pointed out to me recently the doctor actually gave me the wrong kind of dosage - 100mg for days 1-25, I still have periods and my womb, I'm peri...so in theory should be on days 15-26 if I understand it correctly.
Day 25 will be the 14th November, but technically that's the same day my period is due!

My question is when should I stop taking it?  If I'm honest I want to stop now until the 19th, but would that potentially be detrimental or cause any issues?

Thanks for any advice xxx LG

I’m peri and made the same switch two weeks ago. My Dr told me to keep taking the utrogestan up until the Mirena was fitted. I did start to bleed 3 days after the switch and am just stopping today, but it’s been light. All going well so far.

I switched because I had tried continuous utrogestan and felt bloated all the time, and both with continuous and cyclical utrogestan my own cycle used to override it and I’d bleed at random times.

That's good to hear that all going well! I'm almost looking forward to the switch.
Yeah period has come on today almost a week early.  I think I may just stop now until the coil is fitted. Will see how I get on.
Thanks!

I’m really interested in this as I’m struggling on the progesterone and really thinking about having the mirena coil.
Can you update please to see how it’s all going? 🙏

Lavender Girl, are the eye bags and dark shadows a side effect of Utrogestan? I already gave shadows underlying eyes inherited from my dad, but I've noticed lately they are much worse. I assumed it was just the aging process!

I was on utrogestan but it’s been changed to the cheaper version 🙄 I don’t think that’s the issue, it just makes me really tired, emotional and drained and I look like the life has been sucked out of me for 1/2 the month. Good luck with it & I really hope it’s good for you x

hi Mrs Mitch,
To be honest I'm not sure, but I am sure mine are worse since being on it, though I've come off it for a few days and they're still not great so I'm not definite... but it may be due to it inducing a heavier sleep and then the bags and dark circles are a side effect of that maybe.

Think it could be though.

I am on the verge of tears constantly, it could be the emotional turmoil I'm going through atm too, so it's hard to be sure where one thing ends and the other starts ya know?
I feel the same re look like life has been sucked out!
Thank you, me too.. if it doesn't make a difference then I'm back to the drawing board.
Will keep you posted xx

Hi,
Well it's in! The doc said how well i did considering I've not had kids haha, it was a bit uncomfortable, but no bother really.
I'd taken a naproxen and some paracetemol an hour and half before hand which probably helped.

Now it's just to see if it affects my sleep and whether my anxiety drops at all.
Really hoping the switch is the best thing.
Love that I don't have to worry about it for 5 years and I can have an evening meal if I'm working late etc and not worry about the empty stomach thing!
will update you on how I'm feeling over the next few weeks

I recently changed from utrogestan to the mirena due to bleeding issues. My utrogestan had been doubled at night and I found it was making me feel drained. I found the only good thing about it was I had a good nights sleep. I had the mirena fitted whilst under local anaesthetic while having a biopsy following referral under the 2 week pathway. Within 24 hours I felt more alert, so far the only downsides so far  for me have been the bleeding, I’ve bled ever since it was fitted on 21st October, but I understand you can bleed daily for up to 2 months or more following fitting, and also I’m waking up a lot earlier and can’t get back to sleep. I have 6 week coil check with practice nurse in 2 weeks so will check with her then. I’m hoping this sorts out the bleeding issues for me eventually as I don’t really want to stop the hrt as it really helped with my flushes, sweats, brain fog and joint pain.

Hiya,
Yeah I've had light spotting today, so imagine that will go on for a while.
Same re the sleep, that was the only upside of Utrogestan, however the sleep almost felt too deep ya know? Like I woke with terrible bags and dark circles.
Now I'm getting them because I'm waking a lot.  (I stopped Utro a week ago before my coil fitting) But when I wake in the night a few times, I too find it hard to get back to sleep, seems to take ages, I'm part of the 4am club!  :(

The anxiety is easing though but I don't know if that's because other things are easing a bit in my life anyway, but if it's solved that I'll be really pleased!

Doctor fitting it described it as the Gold Standard of Progesterone.  She was awesome too.  So we'll see how we go.

Good luck!

hi all,

First period when on Mirena and it's lasting foreeeever... well I'm on day 9 and seems like no chance of it stopping.

Assume this is normal?

Usual ones are about 5/6 days for me.

Thanks for any help

My first period with a mirena coil lasted something like 6 weeks, but most of it was very light. It gets better though.

After the first four months of erratic bleeding I didn't have another period until it was removed, no spotting, nothing, it was great.

I took mine out after a few years because it was awful for my mood, worse than I realised until it was out and I felt the difference within a couple of days.

For bleeding control it was incredible, my 200ml monthly flood stopped happening, the NHS says 30ml is average and 80ml is classed as unusually heavy!!

For me 80ml would have been incredibly light, that was the only reason they fitted the coil at all.

If you're tolerating it from a mood point of view then I'd say everything is going well with it.

oh my goodness Flo.. that is looooong!  Mine suddenly heavier then light again and I think it's going then doesn't! mad!

Wow, that's interesting to know.

Mood wise I'm a lot better than I was than the Utrogestan, my anxiety on that pill was cripping.
I'm still not great, but that's a lot to do with some trauma and emotional stuff I'm currently going through.. so could be that really.

Thanks for the info! very helpful
