Setraline Advice please
« on: October 23, 2024, 06:35:11 PM »

Hi ladies I’m after your expert advice please. Im 44 and started on hrt gel around 5 weeks ago for perimenopause. I had horrendous anxiety, internal waves of hot flushes, palpitations, nausea, sleep difficulties and some night sweats as well as being tearful and having mood changes.
The initial gp I saw prescribed setraline while I decided about hrt but I didn’t take this. I then saw a hrt gp and they prescribed oestrogel. Initially I struggled to tolerate 2 pumps due to awful side effects, feeling shaky, spaced out, unable to sleep and increase in anxiety and palpitations. After 3 weeks I was able to increase to 2 pumps and side effects have pretty much gone. Her have reduced my palpitations and some anxiety but I’m still feeling pretty anxious, some of which is due to constant catarrh in my throat since Covid 9 months ago, which is also making me not want to eat much. Although I’ve only been on hrt for 5 weeks I’m now seriously thinking of taking the setraline alongside for a few months to try and combat my anxiety, until my hrt has fully kicked in. Has anyone else started taking setraline so soon after starting hrt?? My hrt go is not available for a couple of weeks and I don’t want to prolong feeling this way. I spoke to another go last week who put me off by saying I won’t know which is working if I take both and could feel worse. Would be good to hear you advice please

:welcomemm:  many suggest that anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medications shouldn't be the 1st route for peri-menopausal women.  However that really does depend on what was discussed in the surgery between patient and GP.

Whilst your symptoms seem to be hormone related, if U feel that taking the Setraline for 4-6 months will help, then go for it.  Anxiety can be the pits, it left me house bound in the 1990s.  Medication helped enormously.  I know have ADs daily as well as an anti-anxiety pill to swallow when necessary.

Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary of use.  Many need both HRT and ADs etc., if U find symptoms awful U will know at this stage that it is unlikely to be the HRT.

Let us know how you get on. Perhaps start the Setraline over the weekend?  As for the catarrh, what has the GP suggested for this?  U could see a pharmacist for advice too.

Thank you for your reply. A lot of my symptoms are meno related and the anxiety too but I think that I have got to the point that I need something else too, just to initially reduce the anxiety. I was just a bit worried about starting setraline so soon after staring hrt.  I just don’t want to have to wait another couple months to see if her reduces the anxiety. Hrt seems to be working on reducing the other symptoms. I’m finding I’m clenching my teeth a lot over the last couple of weeks and worrying about the catarrh in throat issue. I’ve been referred to ent for investigation but there’s a 52 week wait. Gp has expedited but not sure it’ll be much quicker.

That's a whole year away  :o

The sertraline will work on different areas of body and brain than the HRT is likely to do.  Let us know how you get on ?
