Constant Bleeding with Mirena Coil and 25mg Estradot
« on: October 08, 2024, 10:55:19 AM »

I wonder if anyone can help me.
I am bleeding constantly, having to wear a tampon or pads.  This is proper red bleeding, not spotting.  I started Evorel Conti 50mg in March as I  had hot flashes constantly.  I began bleeding about 4 weeks in.  In July I saw Gynaecologist who removed some polyps, advised I had fibroids and thick womb lining and fitted a mirena coil and prescribed 25mg estradot.  I had a biopsy, all good.  However, I bleed constantly and have period cramps frequently.  I have no other issues, hot flashes under control, a bit of brain fog but on the whole really good.  Is this normal.  Googling says to give mirena 6 months to a year but this constant bleeding since April is really disruptive and making me physically sore.  Anyone experienced this or what will be causing it?

The soreness is simply from wearing tampons for months.  I switch between them and pads and change every few hours etc.  I was more wondering about the level of bleeding.  It’s no spotting, I wonder how much blood is in there to be honest. I have had a search of the forum but don’t want to bother my doctor if this is perfectly normal and will take months to settle. Or if the 25mg estradot is too low or if I should be off it altogether?

I had a mirena fitted at the end of March due to bleeding on other conti HRT. The bleeding lasted a few weeks but then settled down. I know they often say to give it 6 months but as you are approaching that I would get it checked out.

Did you have your 6 / 8 week check of the mirena?

I bled for a month after getting the mirena but bleeding tapered off towards the end of the month to spotting.  I also had polyps removed and I have fibroids.  I have it in 16 months and am also on 25mg oestrogen patch.  I have tried increasing the patch but it caused extra bleeding with cramps.  So I reduced back to 25mg in January.  I have had periods since but not as heavy.  The last one a couple of weeks ago was heavier so my gp prescribed cerazette and referred me back to gynae to check the position of the coil.  If its not in the correct position it won't be affective, apparently.  So maybe yours has moved, or even fallen out if you have had heavy bleeding.  In any case I highly doubt its normal to bleed so much, continuously for 3 months.  Ask for a review.  Oestrogen is the 'bleeding' hormone and would be the hormone responsible for fibroids as far as I'm aware.  My gp told me that the gynae will check the fibroids too and if they have grown (possibly causing heavier bleeding) I may well have to come off the patch altogether - which I have been tempted to do anyway.
Your gp may prescribe an extra form of progesterone/progestin to try to stop the bleeding, or even tranexemic acid to ease the flow.  Hope you get sorted soon as it is so annoying to have to put up with it.

Thank you for the replies. This is very helpful as didn’t understand what the patch element did.  I’ve not had a check up for the coil to see if it’s in place so maybe it has moved.  On the plus side, bleeding and cramps now and then are the real menopause symptoms I have.
