Utrogestran vaginally
« on: October 08, 2024, 10:19:44 AM »

Does anyone use ustrogestran or another brand vaginally? I am having to go back on the tablets as i had awful side effects on the patches. However, they irritate my stomach as i have gastritis & a hiatus hernia. I was thinking if i could use them vaginally then i wouldn't have that issue. I have an appointment with my gp tomorrow so i can ask her but just wanted any thoughts if possible.
Thanks

Yes you can use Utrogestan vaginally and I think most women on her do because it has fewer side effects.

I think the UK is the only country in the world that doesn't licence Utrogestan to be used vaginally.  It's a ridiculous situation that nobody has ever been able to adequately explain and people who are involved in menopause type associations in the UK and the NHS appear to do nothing about it.  It's very weird and it's been going on for well over 10 years now.

The boxes of Utrogestan that I have bought in the pharmacy in Spain all clearly state oral or vaginal use.   Basically it's the same capsule for both applications so I would definitely give it a try.

It you ask your GP they probably won't know that Utrogestan can be used vaginally.  My niece is a GP and didn't know until I told her.

If it was me I wouldn't ask, I would just do it.

Can I crash with a follow up question?

I started using 1 x 100 Utrogestan vaginally last night as part of my ongoing "what is going on to make me feel rough" search 🙄

Does it have the same sleepy affect vaginally as it does orally?   I took mine quite early last night but then struggled to watch a TV programme an hour later which is unusual for me.    I wasn't expecting the drowsy affect (although I'll be happy if it does!)

I might ask her what alternatives she can suggest for me instead of orally and see if she mentions using them vaginally.
If i used them vaginally without asking the gp do i take the same dose? 2 x 100mg? Also, do i not need some sort of applicator?

Thanks,  that's an absolute winner!

One of the reasons I was sticking with oral was that for the first few days I took it,  I liked the sedative affect (until my body decided it didn't like the prog and then I was wired) but for a few days it was great!

Now to see what happens over the next week 🤞🤞🤞

Yes, same dose, just push them up as far as you can with your finger

A lot of doctors in the US do not recommend the use of progesterone vaginally either. Makes me frustrated as I have read the articles posted by hurdity (thank you!) and more on my own. Even shared with my provider and she still said it is not recommended. I am having less side effects from taking progesterone orally by using it vaginally. I know there are benefits, BUT if the main reason I am taking it is to protect the uterine lining, wouldn't it make sense to put it in my uterus??   ::)

Utrogestan was being used vaginally by IVF patients long before it became part of mainstream menopause treatment.

During one of my cycles I ACCIDENTALLY swallowed a utrogestan capsule and freaked out!

I was actually surprised to find out people were taking it by mouth routinely when I became interested in peri/menopause.

Just been for my gp appointment. Told her the issues i’m having and she gave me the option of using the tablets vaginally. I didn't even have to make the suggestion. Really pleased with the outcome. She has also switched me to utrogestran from gepretix. I am also switching to evorel 50 oestrogen patches instead of the gel. Hopefully everything will be ok now.
