Hand tremors
« on: October 04, 2024, 10:17:58 AM »

Hello,

This may not be a meno symptom but I wondered if anyone had any ideas! I know we're not doctors but I often find the hive mind on here is great for info.
Basically I had twitchy index fingers- at rest- for maybe a couple of years. That has has disappeared but now I have a really pronounced tremor in my hands- not all the time- usually when I'm holding something- not necessarily heavy- almost like it's activated when I'm focusing on doing something.
No idea whether it's related to the previous finger twitch!!
I'm sure there's a myriad possible reasons ranging from scary to benign- I'm honestly not thinking the worst- luckily I don't have health anxiety so suggestions won't scare me silly!!
Just wondered if anyone else has this
I'm on low dose, long term prozac and wonder if it's that?
could it be hormonal- had ovaries removed 4 years ago- can't cope with hrt but seem to have this tremor regardless of hrt or no hrt
lack of vitamins- I eat reasonably well so this would surprise me
thyroid
I've had awful covid over the summer and wonder if this exacerbated it but it was there before so covid didn't initiate it.
thanks for any help

Hi there! So my husband used to always have this and it stopped once he cut out caffeine. If he has a strong coffee, it comes back. Might be worth looking at? x

Hi Gnatty- hope you're well and thanks for replying
Well, I do drink coffee- it's pretty strong- I have 2 per day
I guess the only way is to eliminate altogether and see what happens- yikes! so hard to give up but I wonder what else it's doing if it's making me shake like that
I'll definitely try that- great suggestion!!

Let us know how you get on. You might find you need some paracetamol when the withdrawal kicks in for a few days! x

thanks Gnatty, duly noted
I really want to give it a try
read up a bit on caffeine in general and it does seem that we become more sensitive to it as we age- no surprise, I guess!
My sleep's very unrefreshing, many wakenings during the night, difficulty dropping off- I'm wondering now if coffee could be the culprit.
I'll let you know how it goes :)

My friend has this and has been diagnosed with essential tremor. It used to be called benign essential tremor and is not the same as the tremor associated with Parkinsons. It happens when you are doing stuff such as carrying something but not while you're at rest. It affects both her hands but one is slightly more affected than the other. Could it be that?

Thank you, Taz

that sounds exactly like it- even down to the left hand being more affected than the right.
I had a feeling it wasn't something sinister, more like something I do- coffee, prescription meds - that type of thing
Or maybe something I don't do- HRT!! Thinking about it, even when I've used it it's been v small amounts
Does your friend know what's caused hers?
It's not a huge problem, it was more what else is going on to cause this.
Had one coffee today- won't have any more- can't do it cold turkey, just slowly ;D
