Change of HRT advice
« on: September 18, 2024, 05:58:47 PM »

Hi Ladies

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice . I was originally on the patches, which did help. However for medical reasons ive been put on oestrogel and progesterone tablets for 14 days each month. There are two aspects , I suffer terribly with anxiety and find change hard to deal with, I was also wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what to expect.
Also it is my understanding it is on the 14th night I start taking my tablets. I only started the gel on the 9th of this month. Any advice would be appreciated !

Thanks Lottie

Day 1 is the first day of your bleed and you take utro for 12 days, days 15-26. Most patches come in an oestrogen only form so if you were happy with the patches you had you could probably continue with them. Was the 9th the day after you finished your last conti patch?

Sorry Sheila my post is probably confusing. They have taken me off the patches completely. I am now told to rub the gel on my thighs each day and take the progesterone tablet for 14 days of the month. I do not have regular periods. I liked the patches but was taken off them while they did some medical investigations, thats when they changed my hrt to gel and tablet form. to be honest im just glad to be able to get back on something, because I just had to stop the patches abruptly and had nothing for four month!

Lottie, what patches were you on before?

If they were the combined patches with synthetic progestin, I can see why they might have taken you off. Unless you really need it, it's best to avoid synthetic progestin.

If they were just estrogen patches with separate utrogestan then I don't understand why they have put you on something different instead of back on that...

Anyway, with the utrogestan, whenever you bleed is day 1 of your cycle. Start utrogestan on day 14. If your next cycle happens sooner and doesn't allow you to finish 14 days of the utrogestan, stop the utrogestan when you get it and on the next cycle start it earlier than day 14 so you can get the full 14 days of it in before you bleed... And if your cycles are ages apart or very irregular and you are in late peri, you are probably better off taking it continuously with just a 5 day break to schedule a bleed instead.
