Irregular heavy periods Peri
« on: September 10, 2024, 04:14:44 PM »

Hi,

Advice please regarding heavy periods.

I am 52 and peri.   I have always been regular and my periods heavy, well heavy for two days and then bearable.  Heavy in that I have two wear big sanitary towel, and wear 2 to go to bed.

Not on HRT or any form of contraception.

Last year my periods started becoming very irregular, I had a six month gap and then it came back as normal, heavy for a couple of days then normal flow.   They have been erratic, missing a of months here and there.

Last month I spotted for five days then nothing, then a very light bleed for 7 days I could even wear a tampax.

Well this weekend which is 26 days into cycle I have come on really heavy, I am more heavier than usual and I am on day 2 now.

Can any advise is this normal in peri menopause to be heavier and so irregular.   Just abit anxious now, how many days I could be heavy what is deemed as a period of time to be heavy for.

Any advise appreciated, thank you.

Yes that sounds fairly normal for peri. Periods can get nearer together or further apart and can get lighter or heavier.

Yes this is totally normal in perimenopause.

This doesn't mean that you have to put up with it though - there are multiple treatment options available that you could discuss with your GP.

"Heavy" is difficult to quantify but basically it is anything more than what you would typically expect, what you were used to for most of your life.

Objectively it can be if you are passing clots, flooding through sanitary protection, soiling clothing or bedding, needing to use multiple protection e.g. tampon and towel together or having to change products every 1-2 hours.

If this is happening regularly it is also worth getting a blood test as women in peri can frequently become anaemic despite an adequate diet due to heavy menstrual bleeding.

All sounds like peri to me too, and sounds very similar to how I was.

I had anything from spotting to full on floods, with or without clots, each lasting between a day and weeks on end.

Sometimes I had 2 spotting/bleeds a month, to going months without anything.
