Hysterectomy
« on: September 09, 2024, 06:20:24 AM »

Hi Ladies,
Had a full hysterectomy last Thursday,it went well. In recovery now and on morphine and Diclofenac
suppositories. However, I am experiencing fecal incontinence and am hoping I could get some feed back and advice on how to cope with this and how long it's likely to last please. Thank you.

I feel for you, I had faecal incontinence for the first 2-3 weeks after my daughter's complicated and poorly managed delivery.

It resolved on its own thank goodness but it was miserable.

As you are on morphine it may be worth getting your GP or nurse to do a rectal exam (sorry) to check if you are actually impacted and having overflow incontinence.

Stopping the diclofenac suppositories is also a good idea. They don't provide an amount of pain relief that warrants rectal use in an awake patient especially one with bowel issues. Diclofenac can be taken orally if you need it.

Also I don't know if you have already discovered them but you can either buy or ask your surgical department for these gigantic sanitary towel like things to stick in your pants so your clothes don't get as badly soiled.

This is likely to be self limiting but please make sure your surgical team know about it.

Called the hospital and they said take Imodium until it settles down. Also taking morphine can cause loose bowel movements. Day 5 now and have just taken the dressing off. Am going to stick to a very simple diet for a few days. Anyone with further recovery tips would be  appreciated.

Hi were U advised to stop the morphine and will this be a gradual reduction?

Imodium may help ........ unless the effects of the opiate is stronger.

Let us know how you get on.  Your Surgeon should be informed too.
