England's blood donor service has warned blood stocks are still in short supply as it launches a fresh appeal for donors.

Supplies of blood have improved since an "amber alert" in July but there is still a risk that the care of hospital patients could be impacted, officials said.


Young donors are urged to come forward, especially those with O negative blood type, and more donors of black heritage are also being sought to help treat patients with sickle cell disease.

The NHS has warned that it continues to face a "challenging" blood shortage, as it calls for 200,000 new donors to come forward.

Concern over blood stocks prompted the health service to issue an "amber alert" last year, meaning supplies were running low enough to have an impact on patient treatment.
Supplies have remained low ever since, with officials warning there is a "critical" need for more donors who have O negative blood, which can be given to the majority of patients.

I wonder how many of us do donate blood? I'm really disappointed in myself that I never did and now I'm too old.

I received a massive blood transfusion postpartum and will always be beyond grateful to the donors who saved my life 

Having lost my entire circulating volume and half as much again, I felt so blessed in those first weeks with my daughter knowing that every drop of blood that was now in my body had come from really, really good people.

My mum used to take me with her when she donated blood, and I looked forward to being able to do it too when I grew up. I did manage to several times whilst I was medically eligible.

It also has health benefits for the donor.

I was never heavy enough and now I'm too old

Yes I was around 40 before I became heavy enough. It's around 50kg I think? I was only 47kg at nine months pregnant. Its a bit of a shock being too old to donate for the first time.

If you can't give blood due to age you may still be able to go on the bone marrow donation register if you are interested.

They are less restrictive, it is just a saliva swab to join and they will only send for you if you are a match for someone needing a bone marrow donation.

   I wear an SOS Bracelet as they can have all of me when I don't need me any more ;-)

I did try to join but you have to be under the age of 55.

We were on the Anthony Nolan list for years, DH was called: twice and finished up in London giving a lot of blood but wasn't a match, sadly.
