Oestrogen dominance??
« on: August 24, 2024, 10:59:23 AM »

Hi ladies! I’m curious……I see people mention they are oestrogen dominant but then see others saying there is no such thing? If oestrogen is high and progesterone is low does that just mean there’s an imbalance and more progesterone is needed?

A good place for more info is the Estrogen Dominance Group on FB. It's a controversial topic on here tbh. Bear in mind though, the FB is evangelical about the need for high doses of progesterone and there is defo more than one way to get the balance back, although peri does throw a spanner in the works. Pm me if you like, I don't want to get into a debate with people on here about it.

Have a look of a graph of hormones during a normal menstrual cycle and you'll see that the ratio is different every day so I struggle to see where you would consider it balanced. Hrt generally gives you enough oestrogen to stop your oestrogen deficiency symptoms when you're producing none or very little of you own. If you're peri this means that in parts of the cycle you probably have more than you'd like, and spikes of you own oestrogen can be huge. Some women seem to be better with some progesterone but for many it's what we have to put up with to get oestrogen. Many find utrogestan helps them sleep but I think it may be more that it's a sedative than because it contains progesterone. What suits one person doesn't suit another so it's very much a case of trying it to see what works for you.

Estrogen dominance doesn’t necessarily mean high estrogen level. Estrogen dominance usually happens when progesterone level is too low to have an opposing effect on estrogen. This is a type of hormonal imbalance.

Thanks all, just to clarify I’m not saying I think I’m oestrogen dominant I was just curious if it was a real thing to to conflicting info I’ve read. I think my problem is imbalance as I had mirena for two years along with 100 patch and was doing much better, all the issues started after removal in April, I’m getting one again next week so I’m hoping that will help. I’m peri also so I understand I can be up and down a lot.

Any kind of imbalance is a real thing. It can be not enough estrogen to oppose progesterone or not enough progesterone to oppose estrogen. They are the 2 main female hormones and they are working together. The symptoms of both types of imbalances are very similar, but you can spot the difference if you have good knowledge of them, it can come with your own experience of dealing with different imbalances in your body for a long time for example. Otherwise it can be hard to identify which hormone causes the trouble.
