Dry after Ovestin
« on: August 23, 2024, 01:47:49 PM »

Hello all,

Hope everyone is well. Just wondering if you've experienced troublesome dryness with Ovestin? I've been taking Vagifem every morning for five months and it seems to be keeping the internal bits in working order. I did find that external Ovestin was too painful so didn't persevere with it so used Yes VM which didn't really last. FYI: I'm extremely skin-sensitive. This week, I've made another attempt, applying a pea-sized amount of Ovestin mixed with the same of Yes VM - as suggested on here. I'm tolerating it OK but after a short walk the vulval area is sore and so dry. Would it be better to use the oil-based Yes? A lot of the reviews on its site say its grainy texture is uncomfortable.

Thanks in advance.

I find using ovestin during the day actually irritates and after walking becomes sticky and chaffs. I use both vagifem and ovestin (estriol) at night, I think this gives it a better chance of absorbing and not being disturbed by toilet trips, activity and gravity.
I apply Bepanthan baby ointment on top of the estriol to stop any irritation and to moisturise.

Thanks for your advice, Dierdre. I'm going to try the Vagifem and estriol at night - I was just concerned about the estriol burning and disturbing sleep, but hopefully that won't happen. I have used Epaderm as a moisturiser/barrier but only on its own as it's like Vaseline and I thought it would interfere with the estriol?

I really appreciate you taking the time.

Vagifem and Estriol have a very dry consistency and the reason why a good moisturiser is so important to include in your treatment.
I've used a moisturiser since day one and it seems to work well with the Vagifem and Estriol, both working very effectively and the good thing about using moisturiser you can apply as much as you want.

Hi Ayesha,
Thanks for replying. I started adding Yes VM to the Ovestin after reading your suggestion - thanks for that - and it did seem OK for a week but I think it might be the Yes VM part of the mix doesn't like my extremely weird sensitive skin. So I'm going to try the Ovestin with Epaderm at night soon. This morning put some Eumovate (steroid cream) there, which I'll do for 5 days/nights (prescribed by great nurse a while ago) and it always heals it - then I'll restart everything. Hopefully it's just another blip, as we all go through don't we.

Yes we certainly do and what I find in hot weather symptoms will return which means more treatment. I am not a fan of Summer, I find it always makes my GSM worse.

Hi hystergirl, just a quickie to add to what the others have said - I found both Yes VM & Yes OB irritant, but get on OK with Yes WB & better still, Sylk.  I also use a thin smear of the weaker of the 2 Estriol creams (externally) daily + Vagifem 5 nights a week.  I find Vagifem doesn't dissolve well so apply a blob of Sylk to the tip of the applicator to help it adhere to the vaginal wall.  Hope you make progress.  Perseverence is key with VA treatment.

Oh forgot to say - if you are on systemic HRT & have yet to try Testosterone, that can help with GSM.  I've had oophorectomies & later total hysterectomy & do find T improves systemic dryness.

I can't tolerate YES VM either but OK with YES WB. I can't use any olis either, tried so many moisturisers over the years but I'm so super sensitive, they're ok for a couple of days then start to irritate. I also find Dermovate soothing when really sore but as it's a strong steriod I can't use indefinitely.
Using everything at night seems to work for me and the results last through the daytime.

Wrensong, Dierdre, Ayesha,

I'll try the WB instead of the VM when I've finished the 5-day Eumovate to heal the skin. I thought the VM and WB were the same so I've learned another thing on here.

Thanks again, gold stars all round.
