New symptoms 5 years post menopause?
« on: August 17, 2024, 09:32:28 PM »

Hi, I am 51 and 5.5 years into menopause and have had relatively few symptoms other than VA. Recently however I have been getting brain fog, irritability, low mood and lack of sleep.  I have been on ovestin for a number of years but considering asking for HRT.  In your experience do you think this symptoms are linked to menopause after all this time?
Also I really know very little about HRT and what is best. I have not seen my GP yet as generally he’s not that helpful and to get ovestin I paid to see a private gynaecologist. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks

Yes, it can be meno. The ovaries carry on producing a bit of oestrogen for some time after meno before they die completely.

Yes definitely sounds like menopause. My symptoms worsened 3 years after my last period.

Hello Teaandtoast and welcome to the forum.

I agree with the other ladies that your symptoms are likely menopausal.

I was three years post meno when I began HRT  because new symptoms had started. Some GPs only recognise hot flushes and night sweats as low oestrogen problems so if you want to try HRT perhaps mention those even though you haven't experienced them.

Take care and let us know how you get on.

K.

I'd asked for some routine blood tests to rule out other causes first including thyroid and vitamin deficiency.

U shouldn't have to be paying for any HRT .  Is there a Nurse Practitioner with knowledge?

As others have said, menopause symptoms can strike several years post menopause because the body stores oestrogen for a while which would minimise symptoms.

There's some good information within the Menopause Matters website to give you some basic information on what HRT is and the different options available. Click on the 'Home' tab and then 'What can I do about it.' (Or words to that effect, I've just checked there to find the right info for you and have already forgotten the wording 🙄) Have a browse around to get acquainted with the possibilities so that you can go into your Dr with a specific request.

A lot of us start off on Oestrogen Gel or on Oestrogen patches and those of us with a womb also need progesterone, generally taken in tablet form as Utrogestan. You'll see from the numerous threads within the forum that it can sometimes take a while to settle on a dose to suit you or, like me, you might be lucky from the get go and find your stable point pretty quickly.

Good luck with your appt

Suzie - exactly the same with me.  I click to find advice to give, then it's gone from my brain by the time I get back to the Forum  :o  ::)

It's possible that the symptoms you're experiencing could be related to menopause

Yes these all sound familiar. I have been on HRT because of those symptoms and recently had an increase of progesterone to provide additional protection as I am on 4 pumps daily. I have noticed a big improvement since the increase particularly with a reduction in brain fog and improved sleep. Ask to see if your surgery has a GP with special interest in women's health and or menopause. Good luck
