HRT-friendly doctor recommendations in Spain
« on: August 13, 2024, 09:34:49 PM »

I live in Spain, in Castellon which is close to Valencia, but I'm absolutely willing to travel if the doctor is worth it.

I'd like to hear from other ladies living in Spain who are being prescribed their HRT from doctors here, and you can PM me if you prefer.

So far I've only found 3, two of them in Barcelona and very expensive, the other one is here but I have my doubts about him, not sure he's the right one for me. So I'd like to find out about others.

Thanks in advance!

Hi I know this isn't what you asked for really but in case it helps my understanding is that in Spain you can buy hrt over the counter. So you could in theory have a video consultation with someone in the UK and then get what they recommend or Spanish equivalent.

I'm in Spain and I've been in the private health insurance system for years.  I have yearly (or more if needed) checks and scans with a gynaecologist but they are not experts on HRT.  I do my own thing and buy my HRT in a local pharmacy.  Some of them can be a bit sniffy but most are OK.  I buy Oestraclin and Darstin and in recent years I've been filling prescriptions for people in the UK and posting it due to shortages there.

If you are new to HRT and/or need some guidance, you can have a telephone consultation with a menopause specialist anywhere who will prescribe HRT and then you can get the medication in Spain.

Please send me a PM if it helps.

Thanks to both, I hadn't thought of that possibility to be honest, I'm definitely gonna look into it! However I'm still curious to know if anyone has actually found a gynaecologist in this country who's really knowledgeable about HRT and open to prescribing it without fear.

I know here you can buy most if not all HRT over the counter. Darstin I've used sometimes on my breasts if they hurt, usually from day 12 or so for about a week and it has worked very well for that, I was using it years ago even before all this perimenopause situation came up.

Do you also take Seidigestan Mary G? I see you use Oestraclin too, I do as well, though at first I'd been prescribed Lenzetto, the spray. I wonder if you know what would the equivalency be between them? 1 pump of Oestraclin is 2.5 grams of gel and at 0.6mg of estradiol per gram that'd be 1.50mg estradiol if I'm not wrong?  Lenzetto states it's 1.53mg/spray, so that'd be just 0.03mg more than Oestraclin yet I remember feeling quite different when I used Lenzetto.  The type of estradiol is the exact same, estradiol hemihydrate, so I'm thinking it might be that absorption is quite different between both.

Hi, I've lived in Spain and generally a lot of the medico' s are wary of HRT.
I have a friend who lives on the Costa Blanca near Denia she sees a private Hrt prescribing nurse ( in Javier  I think )who  has a  association to the Newson Clinics here in UK.
I  think Valencia is about 90 mins drive from  here  Javier.
I could find the details and PM you if you d like ?

rferdi, I have never tried Seidigestan because I fear it might be too much like Utrogestan.  I buy Cyclogest in Spain and I occasionally intersperse with that just to make sure I don't get any lining build up.

I tried Lenzetto years ago but it didn't work.  It was far too weak and even three sprays didn't give me a good blood level.  I'm afraid I don't know about the actual strength but I found it much weaker than Oestraclin.

Funnily enough I went to the pharmacy yesterday and spend over €100 on medication!   Some of it was in stock and some I had to order for next day delivery.  I'm one of their best customers and I get free gifts like cosmetics.

Thank you Mary G. Interesting, before Oestraclin I tried 2 sprays of Lenzetto and it proved to be way too much estradiol, I felt extremely wired and nervous, heart racing etc. yet 1 spray didn't seem to be enough.

That's really funny  ;D  yes I also have a few favourite pharmacies here, but I don't get free gifts! Glad you found a good one!

If you are on Facebook rferdi I think you might have more luck asking in menopause FB groups, because there are often women from all over the world there. This is a very UK based forum.... although someone might know...

Thanks joziel, I've tried that already and so far I haven't had much luck with the groups I've joined, but if you have any suggestions of any specific groups let me know, maybe I haven't seen them.  I thought of asking here because there are expats living in Spain who may know.

Hi rferdi
I just came across your post (then had to try a few times to get registered) and am finally approved! Have you found a doctor in Castellon yet? I'm also near Castellon in Oropesa and can very highly recommend Dra Teresa Aznar at Ginenova. She is AMAZING!!! Very compassionate, knowledgeable, and an expert in HRT. There is nobody better than her, for me...
Hope you're doing ok with this heat!

Hi Robin, I just saw your post, sorry for the late reply, but I've not been here for a while now.

Yes! I know about Dr. Teresa Aznar, she's been my gynecologist since about May this year, I found her after thorough research, and you're right that she's a lovely doctor. Quite decently knowledgeable regarding HRT, especially considering how difficult it is to find someone like that in Spain. However she does have her limitations when it comes to increasing the dose of estradiol, and other intricacies of HRT, I think she still doesn't know enough. I wish I could have someone as knowledgeable as Dr. Felice Gersh, she'd be my ideal gynecologist.

I've been very slowly improving, not feeling quite right yet though. My perimenopause has been very difficult, maybe because I've had PCOS all my life and still have it and so I already had an important hormone imbalance that I've had to be taking medication for basically all my life. Dr. Aznar so far has been the best gynecologist I've had here in Spain, that's true.

I hope you're doing well and enjoying the beach and weather in Oropesa, must be really busy with tourists at this time of the year for sure. And thanks again for the recommendation!  :)  :thankyou:
