Insect bites
« on: August 11, 2024, 04:58:55 PM »

Is any1 else being eaten on a regular basis by insects that disappear B4 getting the chance to swot them  :-\

I've changed the bed twice this week due to DH having had shingles.  No evidence of beasties/fleas.  No blood spots on the sheets to suggest bed bugs .........

This afternoon I have 'come up' with 20 on my left side ........ so out comes the 'antisan' liberally smeared.

Any1 know what the term 'hives' might mean ?  I will be laying in a cooling bath soon  ;D

Hives, is something I came out with one year on holiday.
I used an oil suncream, ( well known brown bottle) on my legs, which brought me out in an itchy red rash.
Looked awful..
Took weeks and weeks to go.
It can be caused by insect bites, or chemicals, or even food I believe.
Antihistamines work the best as it stops the itch.

we left the bath water in last night - there are lots of tiny, tiny insects, drowned.  We also have a fly zapper but don't know whether it works/not.  Will be standing bowls of water in front of open windows today.

DH has creamed 11 bites on my back  :o

Itchy, itchy, itchy.

The skin itches intensely and almost immediately a red lump appears - lasts about 48 hours, treated with 'antisan'.  Not hives.  Can't find any insects.  Mainly underneath my jeans down the legs and on the arms.  Scalp itches all day, fortunately not keeping me awake!

There seems to be a huge increase in insect bites this year, or my and my husband's response to them.  Exactly as you describe, CLKD.

I use a product called 'After Bite' (topical application, basically it's ammonia and a bicarb, which my daughter found to be effective when she was in Mexico).  It stops the maddening itching.  But I've also had to take antihistamine on a couple of days because the swelling has been so bad - one bite (that I must've scratched while asleep) on my calf really swelled up.

It's just weird.  Climate change, I should think, some new insects making their way over here.  That said, I've lived all over the world and never been bitten the way I have this year.

Interesting  :thankyou:  the critters don't have the decency to stay around so that I can swot WHOPPS identify them  ;D

Have been to BOOTS this morning  ;D - home with all types of preventatives.

Which haven't worked  >:( - I am covered, 11 new bites appeared this evening.  They seem to be in pairs with about 1/2" between each, if we lived elsewhere I would suspect spiders  :o.  I've boil washed jeans etc. incase they are hiding in the seams .......... I've put relief cream on the front of my body, once that's dried DH will have the task of treating those on my back.

My head itches all the time, he's had a lookC but can't see any runners  :-\.  Make that 12 new bites  >:(

That sounds really annoying! I had a similar experience last summer when I kept getting these weird bites out of nowhere. After checking for bed bugs and fleas (which turned out to be fine), I found out I was allergic to a new laundry detergent. Hives can be super itchy and often come from allergies or skin reactions. If it keeps happening, it might be worth seeing a doc to get it checked out.

Tnx.  We haven't altered anything in our laundry room for years.  We do spend a lot of time outside.
