First period on Oestrogel
« on: August 07, 2024, 06:37:44 AM »

Morning, I was diagnosed as peri due to various symptoms which got worse just before my period and also although my period was still on time it was very light and only lasting a couple of days. I started oestrogel on day 16 of my cycle (as that's when I got the prescription) and I will start utrogestan on day 14 of this cycle for 14 days.
My period came yesterday which was my due date but it's very heavy and ive bled more in 24hrs than I did in the whole of my last few periods. It's bright red and clotty which was always what was period was like. Is this normal that my period is returning to the way it was? Will I always bleed like this? Will I always bleed when I'm on HRT, if so how do I know when I hit menopause?
Been feeling great on the treatment but must admit the couple of days before my period started I did feel a yuk and symptoms intensity did increase. Still early days so still keeping a symptom checker to keep an eye on things.

If you just took estrogen and no progesterone this past cycle, that could explain the heavier flow.

See what it's like after two weeks of progesterone, it may be much more manageable.

You won't necessarily know when you have reached menopause on cyclical hormone therapy but generally people just move onto continuous progesterone after a year or two depending on their age and individual situation, and withdrawal bleeding usually ceases after that.

There are bleed free options that you could have now if you wanted, such as a combined pill taken continuously (if under 50), a mirena IUS or using desogestrel 150mcg (off label) as the progestogen.

Thank you, my mum has had breast cancer so the pill or coil were never an option for me  when it came to contraception so not sure it would be offered now. I was only given option of the rod in the arm for contraception.

You need to give it some time to settle. Usually bleeds become shorter and lighter as you head towards meno but, as above, you may not know when you're there.

I am sorry you were told that, it's completely incorrect.

As a non carrier within a BRCA family with 7 affected relatives I have been on the pill for many years with the support of the genetics clinic since before I knew my status, which I take primarily for the 50% reduction in ovarian cancer risk as well as quality of life benefits.

Any increase in breast cancer risk is marginal and outweighed by the significant risk reduction for ovarian, endometrial and colorectal cancer.
