Ectopics post menopause
« on: August 03, 2024, 05:10:01 PM »

For the last 3 weeks I have been having ectopic beats. I have been to the GP and she said they are very common in the menopause. She examined me and tried to reasure me that all was ok. I am 56 and 4 years post meno. These ectopics are happening at radom times each day. My heart rate isn't raised though usually around 62. Not on hrt and have tried to cut caffeine out to see if it helps. Anyone else experience these post meno.

I'm not post menopause but have had my fair share of ectopic beats.

Have you had a basic panel of blood tests done?

They are a common symptom of perimenopause and menopause and if that's the case should get better on estrogen.

However sometimes they can be associated with mild electrolyte abnormalities hence it is a good idea to check bloods.

Assuming all normal, some people find a supplementing potassium and magnesium helpful.

This might just give you a bit of relief whilst waiting for the full benefits of hormone therapy to kick in.

I've started having these again the last couple of weeks. Started towards the end of our holiday and I put it down to over indulgence plus sharing a villa for 2 weeks with family and grandchildren is more of a challenge than it was when I was younger...... Got home and it started to settle then had to take the cat to the vets for a bladder problem which set it off again. It's worse at night and I'm struggling to get to sleep, the more I worry the worse it gets and although I sleep ok it starts again on waking up. Once I'm up it's ok and my heart rate is normal and no other symptoms. Is this just anxiety again?

I've had lots of ectopics. They first started during pregnancy and I had heart checks but all OK. I cut don on caffeine and they improved. In recent years they started again and I hsve now cut down caffeine to one cup of tea per day and I rarely get them. I'm in my 70's and on systemic HRT for 18 years.

I drink decaff tea but if I drink a couple of ordinary cups of tea it will set them off. Can't drink coffee at all, not even decaff or I'm feeling weird and lightheaded.
I had less ectopic beats yesterday and none so far today so hopefully it's ok now. Had a good talk with my daughter about my anxiety and felt better afterwards so pretty sure it was anxiety triggering them.
I'm not on HRT or ADs but had Talking Therapy for general anxiety last year which was a great help and I refer to my notes when feeling anxious. However, any health problems and all that goes out the window so with ectopic beats it's just a visious circle.
