Meggie. The brave bit is the initial decision. If you are lucky enough to have someone care for you for a week or so after you leave hospital, and you take care of yourself thereafter is not as scary as you may think. The benefits are amazing. Eddie. x

I too have been scared for years, but with my boobs now reaching to below my waist and causing the top of my spine to curve I thought I might at least take the first steps.

I'm only 5ft 3 and have a small frame, and when I look at my body all I can see are these great ugly monstrosities hanging there. I decided that I don't want to look like that anymore. I know my husband finds them repulsive too, though he's never said so in so many words.

I don't know what I'll do if I can't get it done on the NHS. I personally don't have the money to go private and my husband won't pay.

I think you will teen, but you need to push for it, which health board are you under? I was a 32FF/G and i got it done. I wanted it done earlier, 10+ yrs earlier but my husband at the time wouldn't help me, and my parents weren't in best health to help with my then babies. Eddie. x

That sounds hopeful Eddie as yours were smaller than mine. (34K)

I'm in Greater London.

I've only seen the GP so far, who is very supportive. I'm waiting for an appointment with the Public Health team of the Primary Care Trust.

it's annoying having to wait so long before anyone will at least look at me!

I was referred to the Breast clinic, my G.P. said he didn't think they would do anything, but the consultant took one look and said "pendulous" and offered to do breast reduction. Apparently you can have it done for psychological reasons as well as the physical pain issues. I had a lot of pain, the consultant explained it as stretched tissue (saggy boobs) which meant nerves stretching too, which caused the sharp pain and also pain when cold. Lay it on thick, you won't be making it up.

Thanks Eddie!

Yes, I do think I could emphasise the psychological aspects of it as I hate my breasts so much and can't bear to look at them or check for lumps as we should. I do think I'd feel better about myself if they weren't so huge as the rest of me's okay, apart from a little middle-aged spread. I can't wear strappy tops or dresses ( as I'm so top-heavy they're massive around the hips) and I won't show my cleavage as I don't want to draw attention to myself. Being married to a man who doesn't care for large bosoms doesn't help either!

And so it goes on...

When to see my GP for another reason and she asked me how things were progressing. "They're not," I said.

So, she looked it up, and the delay is down to her! The Powers That Be insist on certain criteria being fulfilled, but she hasn't answered their letter.

I have to be below a BMI of 30. Check.
I have to take painkillers for my discomfort. She's given me a prescription.
I have to wear a bra from a trained fitter. Check.
Here's the stumbling block: I have to have a course of physiotherapy first! I'm not happy about that at all. I feel that that is a waste of my time, and public money. Why can't someone just take a look at my curving spine and my dented shoulders?

I have a feeling I'm going to be turned down, which upsets me as my boobs will be hanging down past my hips soon. :'(

I was shocked to hear what the criteria is for this now. Teen, are you being referred to plastic surgery or breast clinic? I know that now you need to lose 500g from each side, that's actually quite alot. I only had 500 between sides, that amounted to about 5 bra sizes.

This page goes on about ratios for reduction, way over my head but maybe you can understand it.

Thanks for that Eddie. I haven't the energy to do the maths, but I reckon my boobs weigh at least 5lbs each! The problem as far as I can see is how much is breast tissue, and how much is fatty tissue? I know I am a little overweight, but my boobs were huge when I weighed a mere 8 stone. And how do they know what is fatty tissue and what is breast tissue?

I haven't been referred anywhere yet. It's gone from the GP to the Clinical Assessment Service, and they are the ones asking that all these criteria are met. It looks as if they'll only see me if I can show that painkillers and physio don't work and that I'm crippled with pain. There has been no mention of psychological issues.

Maybe the systems are different in Scotland and England.
