The RSPCA woman told me if I’d called her about the cat in the backpack they wouldn’t have come out. The police wouldn’t have come out for that either. It was down to me to sort out on my own but I couldn’t have made them release the cat. Unfortunately it all seems to come down to resources. The RSPCA said I should have spoken to them! But if they had turned on me there would have been no police either. There really needs to be an Instagram ad campaign about it really.

Not a lot the public can do.  There's an article in one of the Sat papers about carriers for dogs, well I've seen plenty especially where there are crowds which endanger small breeds.  Cats - 🐱 should they be out and about anyway?

Cats shouldn’t be out and about in general. You see ones on YouTube that have been out from being kittens and seem to enjoy travelling but they need to be protected from overheating and lack of ventilation which isn’t the case with the bubble carriers. They are just a fashion statement I think, a trend. I think I’m going to send my photo to Cats Protection and ask them to put it on their Instagram with some information advising against it.

I've seen cats on shoulders in huge, busy crowds, parrots, the odd snake  .

I think some people like to take their cat for a walk, on a lead, and I don't have an issue with that as it gets them fresh air, however there is absolutely no reason why a cat needs to be taken into a town, or a dog for that matter!

Of course as they age pets still want to be out and about, so a pushchair or rucksack-type thing that allows them to go out is a great idea because they are able to look around, move around and most importantly breathe, but the difference there is that the owners are doing it so the pet can enjoy time outside. These people with plastic backpacks don't care about the animals welfare and are just using them as a fashion accessory 

It would be hard to call the police on someone with one of those plastic backpacks because they would have probably disappeared before anything could be done, and I'm not sure confronting them would work either    I really do think the only way to stop it is to make it socially unacceptable.

Before calling the police for a dog in a hot car I check for notes on the car first, and the reason is because we the main reason we bought our current car is because it has a feature where you can leave the air conditioning on for 30 mins whilst the car is locked, and I do that if I need to stop for a wee. I still chill the car to the point where we're shivering before getting out, and I leave a note on the driver's window that says the air conditioning is on and dog is fine.

I agree. Good idea about looking for a note.

I tried taking my two cats out in a harness, properly fitted.  Of course, 1 wanted to explore in 1 corner of our garden, the smaller cat wandered off in the other  .  Sadly when approached by a dog the small cat backed out of the harness and ran.  It was ages B4 she would come home and we had 36,000 vehicles past our garden daily.  When the other cat escaped from the house he always made for That Main Road  .  I gave up with the harness idea after about 3 attempts.

They had plenty of toys inside to chase and play with as well as the TV ;-).

I agree getting-old, I've seen dogs getting dragged through throngs of people,poor things but unless it's so they don't leave them in a car but why take them in the first place. My worry with cats on leads would be if a dog attacked them.
Well done though Katherine,pity there weren't more people like you,you did what you could in that situation

Thanks Jaypo, I appreciate that  I agree about the cats on harnesses with dogs around. I’ve never seen this in real life, there is a YouTube channel called 1bike1world where a man adopted a stray kitten in the wild and he was travelling the world on his bike so he took here to save her and now she is happy as Larry on his bike, on a harness, etc. But he’s usually out in the sticks.

 I personally wouldn’t do it as I think in general it’s unnatural for them and as you say you would have to be constantly watching out for dogs. I think a lot of people do what’s fun for them rather than what’s best for their pet.

 Anyway I’m still going to ask Cats Protection to put the photo on their instagram, it’s worth a try and a photo is more powerful than words.

Some instances 1 cannot leave a dog at home if 1 is on holiday, visiting busy places.  Trollies for well behaved dogs are great too, keeps them out of the way of feet and knees ;-).  A few breeds of cat adapt well to situations but how 1 finds out safely .......

I'd question how essential it is to visit those busy places? If I was going on a city break then any pets would be at kennels / home with a petsitter. If I'm taking them on holiday then it's their holiday as much as ours and we do things that work for all of us. If there is an absolute need to go into a town or a busy location then someone doesn't go and looks after the pet. It's one of the responsibilities you accept when you gat a pet.

Yep,totally agree,we choose to take our dogs with us when we go away in the rv but when we make that choice,we also choose NOT to drag them down busy high streets etc,it's just not fair on them,not do we leave them in the rv,it's always quiet walks etc but that's the choice we make
