Blimey what a fickle nation we are,if a celebrity endorses something, let's face it,half of them are as thick as two short planks

Generous assessment there I'd say  ;)

I decided not to post a link of a particular brand but if you Google 'bubble cat backpacks' you will see what I mean. Only the cats in the photos have loads of room and big holes for ventilation which wasn't the case with the one I saw. Even so these would be dangerous in direct sunlight.

Anyway I have made a list of organisations I am going to contact at the weekend and will report back xxx

I've already had a response from Cats Protection. They did a press release earlier this year discouraging the use of the backpacks and are planning to do more to educate people in the future. So either they take the opposite view to the RSPCA or the person I spoke to at the RSPCA was unaware or ignorant about cat welfare, or they don't have the resources.

They seem to be so popular, yet they're basically mini saunas  :'( Not sure what's worse, the ones that are totally clear plastic or those with the little window  >:( How anyone can think they're OK in the first place is shocking, but if the poor animal is all hot and bothered when they get it out do they not notice or care????
What they really need is some journalist to take the story on and make it socially unacceptable.........

Some people just shouldn’t have cats. I’ve realised from my cat that they have all the same emotions as we do, except guilt probably. They are really sensitive and they can’t speak for themselves so we have to be able to read them. Ideally I would speak to the BBC but then theywant your name and a photo and I don’t want to be in the news. I will have a think about what else could be done.

These backpacks for cats are extremely cruel, I don’t think there’s ever a situation where it’s acceptable to use them not even to go to the vets, my daughter has two cats and would never put her cats in a torture chamber like that, it’s disgusting and I can’t believe people would openly walk around with one.
There was a petition on change.org to ban them, there are many forums where people are talking about them and the majority of people are calling them cruel and should be banned, it’s just a shame it’s takes so long to get these things banned if they ever do .
As an animal lover I can only hope it will be, as much as I don’t really like confrontation I would of had to say something if I saw one, I would if a dog was left in a hot car , poor cat I can’t imagine feeling so hot and restrained in a tiny uncomfortable place.

I don’t advocate them for the vets either, not for anything. I haven’t seen the petition or other activity, will definitely have to look at that. I think if I saw it again and it felt safe enough I would say something, but it was unexpected and I felt unable to at the time. I couldn’t have remained calm and I don’t think it would have achieved anything. I’m really glad you all can see this from my point of view. I think the response from the RSPCA just made everything seem worse but they seem to be the only ones who aren’t against it, or at least that person I spoke to. I’m looking forward to what their complaints dept have to say about her response.

I completely understand Katherine that you didn’t feel safe to say anything, unfortunately we do live in times where people can become hostile when confronted .
I think the RSPCA’S response was appalling after all we would expect them to want to protect animals, it will be interesting to hear what the complaints department response is , hopefully you will update your post when you get one although it might be a bit of a wait for a response.

Asher I will definitely update you. I’m going to look for the petition and other info you mentioned today. Maybe the RSPCA response was a resource issue. They might think it’s cruel just like Cats Protecton, but ultimately it would be the RSPCA that would be called out by people concerned about a cat, and when they arrive the cat owner may have gone, unlike a dog in a parked car. And if it did become a big trend, they wouldn’t be able to manage it at all. So I guess they might be treading carefully with what they say. Anyway time will tell. That poor cat is haunting me though, I can’t bear to see an animal suffer. I feel bad for just doing nothing  :'(

Are you (meaning you in general)able to call the police for a cat in distress?

I had a policeman knock at the door a few weeks back to ask if I knew who had parked a certain car opposite us which had a dog left in it on a sunny day.
Someone walking by must have reported it.

I would call the police if necessary for an animal indistress.  I think in my case anyway if there are emotions involved I don’t realise what I could have done until after the event when it’s too late. For a dog in a hot car I think it would be an automatic response but when I saw the cat in the backpack I had never seen that happen before and didn’t know those bubble backpacks existed. They were walking so casually and no one else was battering an eyelid, and also there were 3 of them and 1 of me. I think if it happened again, I would probably think more clearly as I’ve now seen it before, if that makes sense. To be honest where I live seeing the police is not a regular occurrence so I doubt they would come out especially unless there was a robbery in progress or something similar!

As a bit of a meander it's those that leave dogs in vehicles at County Shows etc.  >:( some Events have security wandering round checking and if dog/s are found, the registration is called over the tannoy and the owners asked to leave.  I have in the past reported such incidents.

I have the RSPCA/SSPCA number logged in my phone,I'd not hesitate to call if I thought an animal was in distress and have done in the past
