Combined Pill and Gastritis
« on: June 19, 2024, 08:32:57 AM »

Hi everyone,

I’m currently suffering with Gastritis caused by NSAIDs and iron supplements. They’ve done a right number on my stomach and I’ve been nauseous constantly for the last seven weeks. The GP has started me on Famotidine on Monday as I can’t tolerate any PPIs.

I take Yasmin (now continuously) for perimenopause symptoms which has always suited me but I’m now worrying that it’s prolonging my Gastritis as I think Estrogen can be harsh on the stomach. I have always taken it in an evening after my dinner as taking it in a morning has always caused me nausea. I’m wondering whether asking to swap to a patch instead of the Yasmin pill would help my stomach? I’ll do anything to get rid of this nausea, it’s ruining my life. I’ve lost so much weight and had to have so much time off work with it as the nausea is so bad I can’t function properly.

The nausea I wake up with and then it generally stops around late afternoon, which is making me wonder if the harshness of the Yasmin on my stomach is preventing it from healing.

Has anyone swapped from pills to patches for combined pills or HRT because of a sensitive stomach and it has helped please?

Have you had any investigation of your stomach problems? Drugs such as ibuprofen ca be so damaging to your digestive tract.

I’ve had blood tests and stool sample tests etc, all fine. I only took the NSAIDs for a week, but I never usually take anything so it seems to have done a right number on my poor stomach lining, combined with the iron supplements (again only took for 8 days and then this began so I stopped right away). A fortnight later I then had to have Co-Amoxiclav for a UTI, which I don’t think has helped either 😢😢

Okay. It's probably not gone on long enough to warrant an endoscopy.  It sounds like the drugs, it's usually stomach pain though. Some of us are less tolerant of the drugs than others. 3 doses would be enough to aggravate my stomach. They can cause ulcers too. Maybe try to eat little and often and avoid fatty foods if you're nauseas.  I get a sore stomach with a really empty hungry feeling with gastritis.

Thank you 🩷

I had a stomach bug about 2 years ago and for a good six months after I was nauseous for a bit each day, but I noticed I wasn’t when I was on my pill break. That was when I started making sure I took it after dinner in an evening and the nausea stopped. It was as if the bug had made my stomach more sensitive to the hormones in the pill. Hence why I’m wondering if that’s happening now?

It could be. Our stomachs are very sensitive. Mine objects to anything different and it starts off a cycle of digestive disturbance and takes a few days to settle.  I dread being invited out. Maybe try shifting your routine around but if it continues go back to your GP until you're reassured everything is ok.
