Hi Ladies,  I am post menopause now at 51 years old.  Perimenopause was horrendous for me with terrible anxiety, insomnia, inflamed skin, night sweats, poor mood, food intolerances that I never used to have, and overall body soreness.  Post menopause the severity of the symptoms have improved though they are still all there to a lesser degree, except for joint pain which has increased.
My issue is for 2.5years in perimenopause I tried a lot of different forms of hrt (utrogestan, estrogel, patches, femosten, tibolone, bijuve) but all of them resulted in bad fluid retention to the point of making it very painful to walk and exhausted all the time.    So in the end I had to go without any hrt, but post menopause my joint pain has worsened and I continue to have permanent underlying anxiety and fatigue.  I know it's all due to hormone changes, but I can't seem to tolerate anything to help me.  Has anyone else had this experience and have you had any luck with treatment?  Thank you everyone.

Morning and sorry that no one has welcomed you to the Forum  :welcomemm:

Has your GP referred you to a dedicated menopause clinic for more detailed advice?  Not a gynaecologist .........

Did U have 'retention' during your menstrual cycles?  Do U mean bloating or that you were unable pass urine?

Low oestrogen can cause laxity of muscles = aches and pains.  Do U find that over the counter pain relief helps at all?

Do get your Nurse Practitioner/GP to do blood tests to check thyroid function and  VitD levels.  Let us know how. you get on.

Thank you CLKD.  No I didn't have fluid retention during menstrual cycles. Yes I have seen several GPs, a gynaecologis, a specialist menopause clinic GP and an endocronologist during my journey trying to get help.  They have all said they have not experienced a client who appears so sensitive to hrt, nor who has experienced fluid retention like this.  The fluid retention when I've tried hrt ends up being everywhere in my body but in particular - feet and ankles, knees, hands and arms.  Regarding the joint pain I now have, voltarin combined with panadol helps a bit to ease the discomfort but not enough to ease the overall fatigue from the discomfort. Plus I can't take voltarin long term. Yes I have had several blood tests in the last 5 years to check all key parameters including thyroid and vit d. Everything comes back normal.
I seem to be destined to live a life a shadow of my former self as nothing seems to work. It's debilitating.  I'm not on this forum to be doom and gloom though.  I just hoped there might be someone else out there who has been super sensitive to hrt and experienced bad fluid retention on it, and has maybe found something that helps.

Hi,

When I first complained about my swelling lower legs, at ca 45, my then GP asked me what my mother's and other women's in family legs were like. They were awful. Pain, swelling, the lot. Genetic!

True or not, now at 69, I wear compression stockings every day for all that swelling for years resulted in dermatological condition called varicose eczema.

I know, my lifestyle contributed to it! If I walked more instead of sitting whole days at my computer, and properly creamed my skin regularly, things could be different. Regular brisk walking helps!

Retention comes and goes, in my hands too, and I still have no clue what triggers it. No one ever told me either.  From my symptoms, I am guessing it has something to do with small blood vessels and circulation.
That appeared as one from very first  changes even before peri. ..later with bloating, food sensitivities, and more and more jazz as years passed by... but I can recall few events before, like long train journey in hot weather, or hot day at work sitting,  or bad PMT, after which my lower legs would go into elephant size..  ..
I am on HRT.
How it would be without it? I will never know!  But I do not think my retention is HRT related. My mother, my aunt, my grandmother, had an awful one. Mother drank potassium for it..and poisoned herself with it not once. I wear knee-highs.
🤗

Not sure I can help much  :(. You could try turmeric for joint pain. Testosterone may help with fatigue. They will sometimes prescribe this without hrt in special circumstances. And ads for the anxiety. I'm sorry you're in this situation. Is it the oestrogen that causes it or progesterone?
