Reacting to Dermovate/Clobaderm
« on: April 10, 2024, 08:44:15 AM »

I was diagnosed in September with Lichen Sclerosis based on the changes in the structure of the outa labia and not on any visible activity. I also have VA. Fortunately I have not had much discomfort with no itching, a tiny bit of light burning and quite a lot of loss of tissue. So was prescribed Cloberderm. I seem to be reacting when I use the Clobaderm, I am only using it once a week as a prevention. Everything immediately gets angry and red for a few days after use. What I am puzzled about is what does active LS look like?  All I notice is a pale shiny streak occasionally and a bit silvery not white or powdery as some people describe. I am wondering if it really is LS or is this a symptom of VA. Does anyone know if you can get fusing and loss of tissue with VA?

I am seeing a dermatologist next week for another skin issue and my GP has written to them to also check the LS situation, as I was in a real bad way from using a different Estrogen pessary to my usual. I am feeling confused about my symptoms and would really value a share of your experiences of VA or LS. to see if any of you have this silvery hue to the area at all?

Thank you ladies

I was diagnosed a few years ago by a vulva specialist,  he said there were traces of LS but inactive at the time. I get a red line that looks like a thin train track on one side of my labia. Never had an itch or fusing but it does get sore and there's loss and shrinkage of labia with the grey shine sometimes. Mine could be a VA flare up as I have that too but without having a biopsy to confirm this I suppose I'll never know for definate. I have Dermavate to use as and when needed and whether it's VA or LS this stuff does help usually but occasionally it irritates, not sure why.

Thank you Deirdre, it seems the fusing and tissue loss is the key factor in my diagnosis. I am going to read up on vaginal atrophy more as well, it seems atrophy is shrinkage and pain rather than loss of tissue. I find it so difficult to apply the steroid, with a painful trapped nerve in my back its a nightmare as the directions are to apply on affected areas only, which in preventative use is difficult to decipher! I guess I need to ask more at this appointment. Was your vulva specialist a gynae or dermatologist?

He was gynae but a top consultant with a very long waiting list at the time so I assumed he knew his stuff.  I just apply the cream everywhere down there, it gets everywhere anyway. There's ointment as well as cream but i didn't get on with the ointment, must be different ingredients.

Ok, thank you, good to know there also is a cream and that you apply it across the whole area. I am very sensitive to skin products in general, perhaps it isn't as strong as the ointment, I will bring this up at my appointment.

If a product causes symptoms stop using it  :-\

Is there a Lichen Sclerosis support group?

I dont think you should be using Dermovate inside the vagina, it's for external use on the vulva and labia skin usually for Lichens sclerosus and also healing very sore damaged skin caused by vaginal atrophy. I've been using it on and off for years but never inside the vagina.
When i have a flare up I use a small pea sized amont and spread thinly on the vulva skin. I use twice a day up to 4 weeks if needed but it usually is healed in a week or two.
Lichen sclerosis does not affect inside the vagina just the skin and tissue externally. If you have vaginal atrophy you will need local estrogen pessaries and cream.
What did the doctir prescibe the Dermovate for?

Vulval atrophy mimics LS also. Everything withers, and becomes thin and sensitive , changing colour to a  pale whitish .

Use 0.01% vaginal estrogen daily pea size on the vulva.  ( the weaker estrogen in the big tube) .
