The research clearly shows that studies done on fractures in postmenopausal women indicate that women with non-osteoporotic scores actually have MORE fractures.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1963365/#:~:text=Of%20these%20765%20osteoporotic%20fractures,bone%20mineral%20density%20or%20osteopenia.

A tool has been developed called FRAX which includes other factors to assess risk:

https://www.fraxplus.org/calculation-tool

You can put your own numbers in to get your fracture risk to make decisions about treatment. There are many options but doctors will steer you towards the cheaper bisphosphonates. I respect anyone's treatment of choice but you must get all the facts (bossyboots).

tried the FRAX calculation tool but it wouldn't accept my details  ::). as I have a 'no' to all the questions thus far, I don't think I'm at risk though I do tend to bend forwards so need to get DH to straighten me!

I've got my latest scan results.  Since last scan, 5 years ago -
R femur improved 1.8%
L femur improved 0.8%
Spine decreased 2.8%

I'm only just into Osteopenia level for femurs.
Spine T-score is -2.4 (-2.5 = Osteoporosis) so disappointing.
Why have femurs improved and not spine - through gaining weight maybe.  I read the scale wrong - I'm 8.9 stone, not 9.9 - should have put my glasses on).

So I have a target - spine improvement in 3 years (when next scan is due).

Royal Osteo Soc website has been useful (thanks CLKD).

I'm re-starting HRT, make sauerkraut (K2), magnesium & vit C supplement (half dose as diet quite good, also worried about histamine levels with Vitamin C and Oestrogen - have to see how it goes), already take Turmeric for neck pain and didn't know it may benefit bone mass, so a bonus.

I've done regular strengthening exercises for over 20 years so will have to look specifically at exercises for strengthening the spine.

It's not just the fracture risk - I'd like to keep a straight back too :)

HellsBells - re testosterone and progesterone stimulating osteoblasts...  Do you know if adding progesterone (Utrogestan) would benefit or is the Mirena enough - or where I can find that info?

I forget and find myself learning forwards  :-\ especially. when carrying items to the compost in a bucket.  Then I forget to straighten up!

CLKD, I've noticed I do it going upstairs :)
Started to go up back straight now - different set of muscles.

Hi Wren - I don't know enough about the Mirena at all I'm afraid. However if it is enough of a dose as a protective against oestrogen and its effects I would imagine it is.

To all of us fairly recently diagnosed with OP, there is a very useful and interesting FB group ( the one with ‘friendly support’ in the title).
