Waking up unwell in night
« on: March 21, 2024, 01:28:18 PM »

Hi, I have been experiencing pelvic pain after peeing at night and am getting up several times to pee. This has been going on for 3 months and now and after ruling out everything else i have now been prescribed vaginal tablets to see if it will help. The reason i have visited the forum though is because over the last couple of weeks I have also been going to bed and falling asleep feeling fine but then wake up in the early hours of the morning feeling unwell. Its hard to describe, I am not dizzy but feel something is going on in my head, maybe a light-headedness and feel generally unwell. Has anyone else experienced anything like this during the night? I am currently going through my perimenopause.

Hi - Yes I used to get this quite frequently.  Like a whole body/head sickness/nausea?  I would then get freezing cold and shaky but would go back to sleep and feel fine when waking. Would also sometimes wake up with awful abdominal cramps.  Are you on HRT?  I don't get it as much anymore, maybe once every few months.  Don't know if it has anything to do with the HRT, I've been on it for 18 months now.  No idea why it happens just another weird thing to add to my list!  xx

Thanks so much for reply. It is somewhat comforting to know its not just me :-\... I also experienced shakiness a couple of weeks ago on a few occasions. Its not nice when you first experience it and was quite scary. It has settled down somewhat and I am not really shaking, just have the other symtoms which can last all night so along with getting up to pee and tummy pain I am feeling washed out all the time from lack of sleep at night. Hoping the vaginal meds help with this. I am on HRT also. Doctor did suggest upping the dosage as I am currently on the lowest.

My first thought is could it be a drop in blood sugar? Have you tried having a small snack when it happens?

That was my thought, drop in blood sugar.  Cortisol: the waking hormones: can be a nuisance, I would wake suddenly: terrified.  Make sure that you eat a 'supper' 40 moments B4 bed and if U get out of bed have a biscuit B4 going back to sleep.

I found eating every 3 hours really helpful.  24/7.

I am willing to try anything as so fed up with feeling like this and not really getting any answers at all at the moment. Will certainly test this theory and hope it makes a difference.

I have kept to the eating regularly for years and when I miss a meal or eat 'too late', the next day I feel ill.  The National Association for Pre-menstrucal Syndrome gave me that advice.

.
I had this, was even referred to an endocrinologist and asked to measure quantities of urine and report back, the consultant said I might have diabtes insipidus. I eventually saw a private menopause doctor and she put me straight onto vagifem and I went from going to the toilet 4/5 times a night to just once! Its lack of estrogen, it affects us in so many ways and sadly most medics are not clued up on Menopause. So many resources wasted on inappropriate referrals ! Hopefuly the pessaries will work for you

I don't want to speak too soon but I have been peeing in the night between 8 and 11 times. Been on the vagifem for a couple of days and last night I think I only got up 2 to 3 times and pain not as severe so really hope these meds are the reason. I agree there is still a varied amount of knowledge. There is only one doctor at my surgery who has has additional training specifically around menapause. It really does depend on who you speak to. I have had numerous urine tests, blood tests, an ultrasound and a CT scan over the last 3 months...

This sounds very promising to be experiencing improvement already, I feel for you its awfully distressing when you dont know whats going on.
I read a book called Oestrogen Matters, a total eye opener! The menopause specialist was pretty upset at my journey but its not their fault I guess
we are glad at last there is more awareness but it all takes time to filter out there.

I have a new lady GP now at my practice, she is very knowledgable and if she doesnt know she finds out. Wish we had more of these!

Long may your situation improve. The dizzy spells may also be down to lack of estrogen, not sure if you are on any other hormones other than pessaries

Certainly using VA treatment will fortunately ease symptoms.  At least 2-3 weeks initially .  Let us know how you get on.  I believe that giddiness may be caused by low oestrogen.
