I don't mean PMDD type Progesterone intolerance, I mean an actual allergy
Keen to hear from them if so! x
I know I’m coming to this discussion late but thought I should post anyway.
I believe I am experiencing allergies or hypersensitivities to both progesterone micro and estradiol. At the moment, I am taking only progesterone micro and have had the following experiences:
1) no noticeable allergic reaction to 100 mg plus 1/2 of a Zyrtec (this combo gave me dependable sleep every night for nearly two months - heaven!);
2) 200 mg with no Zyrtec - night 1: whole body diffuse itching with red rash that came on several hours after taking progesterone micro; night 2: whole body diffuse itching with red rash in some spots, 1 hive, swollen upper lip (again came on a few hours after taking the prog micro)
I had started on the prog micro alone to see if it was causing insomnia. A prior attempt at hrt (prog micro + estradiol patch) earlier this year had turned me into a complete insomniac for 8 weeks and I thought I’d give it another go. This time my menopause doc instructed me to try the prog micro alone without estradiol to see how I reacted. The prog micro alone + 1/2 Zyrtec resulted in beautifully dependable sleepiness at night and longer, more restful sleep. It was heaven!
Prior to this, I had been taking my own cocktail of Zyrtec + CBN patch + lemon balm + magnesium to help me sleep. When I started the Prog Micro without estradiol, I still took 1/2 Zyrtec thinking it could help with sleep, but when I saw how well the Prog Micro was helping with sleep, I decided to stop taking the Zyrtec. I had also stopped the CBN + lemon balm. It was when I stopped the Zyrtec that I noticed the allergic/hypersensitivity reaction.
I’ve experimented taking the Prog Micro with and without Zyrtec and can confidently say that Zyrtec suppresses the reaction. I can also confidently say that it’s the Prog Micro pill that’s causing the allergy as I have changed nothing else in my diet, personal products, lifestyle, etc.
I’m crestfallen because I thought I had found something that would help me get dependable sleep, but now am not sure whether I should take Prog Micro at all even though the Zyrtec suppresses my allergic reaction. I am going to make an appointment with my allergist but I know what she’s going to say.
As for my allergy to estradiol, I had a similar reaction to an estradiol vaginal cream. Labia swelled up but no itching. I thought my labia were just getting plumped up LOL. But then I tried the vaginal cream on my face and my upper lip swelled up. I also react to my estradiol patch by getting completely wired, as in more awake than awake, and cannot sleep while on it.
