Provera - Medroxyprogesterone Being discontinued ??
« on: March 01, 2024, 08:39:40 AM »

Morning everyone

I received an email this morning, advising me that my HRT prepayment certificate is due for renewal. I'm currently on Sandrena and Provera (My prescription just states generic Medroxyprogesterone)continuously.

They included a link to the medicines covered by the certificate and looking down, no Provera was listed and the only other items shown as being  Medroxyprogesterone, are due to be discontinued in August.

I'm now worried, that the Medroxyprogesterone will not be available.

Here is the list of items

https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/help-nhs-prescription-costs/nhs-hormone-replacement-therapy-prescription-prepayment-certificate-hrt-ppc/medicines-covered-hrt-ppc

Could someone have a look to see if I'm looking at it correctly, I may be missing something (wouldn't be the first time!)

I've just recently changed my dosage and finally feel I'm getting somewhere with my HRT after over a year of trying and now worried I'll be back to the drawing board again.

Many thanks all x

It is odd, I couldn't tolerate Utrogestan at all, which is why I started Provera. I don't want a coil for many reasons, so it's worrying.

Another thing I'm now getting anxious about, is I have been getting it under my pre payment certificate for a year now and I'm just now thinking, I hope they don't say it shouldn't have been included and I should have been paying for the prescription. It doesn't take a lot for me to get anxious at the moment 😓

Thank you for this, put my mind a little at rest.

I'll just carry on and see what happens going forward with the prescriptions.  When I collect my next delivery from the pharmacy, I'll get them to check if it is included and if I have to pay, I'll have to. It will still be economical to pay for the certificate, as my Sandrena is covered.

Thanks again, I can calm down a bit now  :)

Hi I don't think that Provera has ever been covered by the HRT pre pay certificate.

If you need to pay for it in future as well as Sandrena then it will probably be more economical to get a normal pre paid certificate rather than an hrt one.

I've just been thinking about this actually, I have another item I always have to pay for as well as the HRT.

I'll have to work it out and see if it will work out cheaper just to get a normal year one. At least I won't be panicking that things aren't covered and I'll get into trouble.

Thanks for that x

Hi Charliehorse…I have 3 HRT prescriptions but also have 2 other prescriptions. It’s cheaper for me to pay the yearly charge ( was £104 ) rather than pay the HRT prepayment charge .

Mine are free now (antiquated  :() but I had prescriptions for 3 months worth of hrt and found if I had a 3 month pre payment I could get one at the start and another just before it expired.

Hiya, I’ve just had my Provera prescription renewed for another year from this week, no mention of it being discontinued. I pay for mine each time I collect it from the chemist so maybe it’s do to with the pre-pay.  I couldn’t live without it either!

I notice Cyclogest isn't there either, I've been prescribed that as HRT too.

For info - Cyclogest is not listed because it is not licensed as a progestogen as part of HRT, only for infertility treatment, maybe to regulate bleeding too?

Hi Muso9

I am on provera 10mg and when I went to get my last prescription the chemist told me that the HRT prepaid prescription no longer covers provera 10mg only 5mg 🙄.
He checked through for ages as I was so surprised but when he showed me the list, it clearly showed 5mg not 10mg. So I had to pay for it separately which is bit annoying.

For IVF, it is used as preventative to maintain pregnancies in woman at risk of miscarriage due to low progesterone levels. That and progesterone in oil injections (which you do in your bum) which are really painful! So yes, bleeding related too.

I really don’t get why they won’t include that strength as you say people will just ask for 5mg tablets.  Which is what I thought I would do with my next prescription and if no joy I’ll just get the normal prepaid as I need to get my inhaler anyway.
