Thyroid blood test - fast or not?
« on: February 26, 2024, 12:55:49 PM »

Hello
Can anyone advise me…

I’m having a private blood test to check thyroid for a number of symptoms I have which look a lot like hypothyroidism. I’m having the test at 8am. Should I avoid eating and drinking beforehand? I’ve not been advised to by the company doing the test but I’m sure I’ve heard people mention on here that they usually do, so I wanted to check.

I’ve had lots of NHS thyroid tests in the past which always show normal TSH and a T4 on the low end of the normal range. Just want to try to get the most accurate numbers possible this time.
Thanks so much!

I was advised not to eat. I can't remember if there was advice about drinking but as mine was early in the morning I didn't anyway.

Always have thyroid blood tests before 9am.
Nothing to eat or drink except water.
If you take any supplements with biotin, stop taking them for a few days beforehand. Biotin can sometimes interfere with the testing process depending on how the blood is tested and give false results.

Good luck.

Ive been having a blood test every year for the past 20 odd years and never once have I been told not to eat or drink beforehand.

I'm certainly going to ask about this at my next one.

My DH has regular test and he has never been told not to eat and drink, only time he has to not have anything is when they do a glucose test. I will get him to ask next time just in case he has been doing it wrong all this time.
