HRT and family history of breast cancer
« on: February 16, 2024, 07:49:39 PM »

Is there anyone out there that has been prescribed HRT who has a family history of breast cancer?

I have had multiple GP appointments about perimenopause symptoms and at the moment they won’t prescribe me HRT because my father had breast cancer and so I automatically get categorised as moderate risk of breast cancer.

I’m interested to know if other people’s GPs have prescribed HRT in my scenario?

Your GP has to allow you to have a Quality of Life.  I would ring and ask for an appt. to a dedicated menopause clinic where you should be told the exact risks.  There is a school of thought that women who have undergone treatment for breast disease should be allowed to use HRT.  After all, that bus might be along B4 a regime triggers cancer.

It HRT is that dangerous we should be advised to have bilateral mastectomy rather than not using HRT.  I wonder how often HRT triggers breast disease?

If your dad had breast cancer then I think you should have been given genetic testing according to this info https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/breast-cancer/risks-causes/family-history-and-inherited-genes

Have you had any testing done?

Thank you for your replies .

I was referred to the genetics clinic and they decided not to test as I think you have to have more than one family member with breast cancer to be tested. Instead I have had an annual mammogram and was discharged from the genetics clinic.

I think they still say you are moderate risk if you have a family history without testing positive for BRCA1 /2.

Is it possible to go to a menopause specialist on NHS? I am considering going private.

It's more than one if the relatives are females but only one if the first degree relative is male. This is explained in the link I posted.  :-\
