Closed cervix and bleeding on HRT
« on: February 15, 2024, 04:17:06 PM »

Hi

I have been on estrogen gel 2 pumps and provera 12 days in 28 for the last 9 months. I also take the mini pill.
I went to get a Mirena coil fitted and there was a membrane over my cervix so they couldn’t fit it. My GP today said my cervix is tiny so no surprise about the fitting 😞. But I had heavy bleeding 3 weeks ago, so I am now going for an emergency hospital appointment.
I am so confused as I can’t understand how my cervix can be basically so tiny it’s nearly closed and yet three weeks ago I was bleeding?
Has anyone else had similar? I find my GP is very to the point she’s good but there’s never any explanation of why it might have occurred.
She just said have the hospital gynae appointment and that my HRT obviously needs adjustment. That was it. It’s so hard to get any more info out of her.
I am 45 and perimenopause, however having been on the pill for years I would have no idea if I gave periods.
Any help or anyone been in a similar situation?
Many thanks ☺️

Probably because your GP hasn't much idea about over all HRT regimes.

Blood doesn't need a lot of space to run, like any liquid gravity will help it find its own level.  Make a list of queries to take to your appt., any idea when this will B?  Gynaecologists aren't often au fait with menopause so B prepared to need a dedicated menopause clinic appt. once you've had this issue discussed.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi CLKD

Thank you for your reply, I have been finding out since starting HRT that most GPs seem to know barely anything with dosage etc.
I do worry that maybe it has caused my cervix to close. That’s interesting to know that blood could still get through, I was thinking how could I be bleeding yet have have a minuscule, the GPs words, opening to my cervix. The doctor trying to put the coil in said there was a membrane across which I don’t really understand.
I hope the hospital gynae will help a bit, but thanks for the heads up about them not be too knowledgeable on HRT either. I’m having to wait for a phone call for my appointment. Still carry on with the HRT then go from there. My GP hopes the hospital gynae will fit the mirena under general anaesthetic.

Hi Mazyglenda,  I don't know if this is exactly the same as your situation but in December when I had my failed biopsy it was because my  cervix had closed.  I am 55 though so a bit older than you however the last 3 smears I've had they have struggled to do them so it's been the same for a long time now. I think it's pretty common the older we get....that's what the gynae consultant told me.
Like CLKD says blood will always work its way out due to gravity.
At least you're having the necessary treatment now so hope all goes well for you

Hi Northern girl

Thank you that’s really good to know, when they couldn’t insert the coil I felt so deflated, worried and like an oddity. So it’s so good to hear I’m not the only person. Also like you and CKLD say about gravity and the blood, makes sense and again makes me feel a lot better. I think the non understanding or explanation from nurses and GPs  just leave you wondering all sorts of things!

Hi Jules

I was half expecting her to tell me to stop, but there’s was no mention of it.
I completely agree about them driving you mad, I’ve got one Dr who prescribed me HRT completely wrongly at the start. Then this Dr who just has this way of avoiding talking through about any of it.
I hope your investigation goes okay and that maybe you can restart. I know I would be be gutted to have to stop as it has helped with so many things ☺️

I'm not getting any replies to my request for a scan. I just dont know what to do but I know how you feel,  doctors saying different things. I've stopped using mine for now, undoing all the improvements I've made, but I may start again
