Acid reflux/heart burn
« on: February 14, 2024, 04:19:41 PM »

Hi All

Hope everyone is ok well ok as can be.

I am having a rough week, I have acid reflux/heart burn which sounds like nothing but omg I have been in so much pain in my sternum area, chest, throat and back. Not sleeping as keep waking up with acid even though am trying to sleep as up right as possible.
I have also been quite breathless with it all, gasy, burping and bloating.
Am now on 30mg Lanzoprozole, had a full bottle of Gaviscon and earring rennies for fun.
Went to the GP today no answers really she took my bloods and said she will call me tomorrow with a plan.
I have been off work which is not like me I don’t take time off work normally.

I just wanted to ask if anyone has experience anything similar, is it part of peri Men or not.

Thanks x

Peri - as hormone levels drop muscles may become lax = hiatus hernia which may well cause heartburn, reflux etc..  MayB discuss this possibility with the GP.  Which blood tests have she ordered?

Gaviscon  :-X  :sick02:  I'm sure that someone will be along as to which 'gaviscon' you should swallow.  I have used 'Rennies' and 'Milk of Magnesia' in the past.  MayB have a look at your diet over all 2 C whether there are any triggers as our guts do become fussy as we age  ::)

What Gaviscon are you using? Gaviscon Advance is the better one if you take after eating and before bed, and make sure you don't drink or eat anything afterwards (even rennies).

I had rennie deflatine for the gassy burpy feeling and that helped.

When i was on a drug like lanzoprazole for gastritis short term, I did a split dose so one in the morning and one in the evening as that helped more.

Yes it can be a meno symptom but unfortunately hrt both estrogen and progesterone (especially progrsterone) can cause it. I'm glad your doctor is calling you back with a plan though, as gaviscon is definitely not a long term solution if you are in that much pain.

Let us know how you get on.  When does it affect U the most?   Occasionally I get a deep pain between my ribs which moves into my jaw line, if I drink fizzy water it goes.  It's different to the reflux and heartburn.

I have. I've had endless problems for years. Eventually it caused some damage. Those symptoms can also be due to gall stones too. Try not to eat less than 3 hours before bed and cut out anything fizzy or gassy or spicey, don't eat large portions.

I've had intense wind this evening  >:(.  I rarely burp [long story short] so it sits, rolling round  :-\ :-X

Off for a bath  ;)

Poor you. I really sympathise. I had similar symptoms for three years. Mostly, a constant post nasal drip and occasionally pain as CLKD described. I think mine seemed more laryngo-pharyngeal reflux as it was better when I laid flat.

After much messing about by GPs with nasal sprays, on and off esomeprazole, antihistamines, I was sent for an endoscopy which showed I had a hiatus hernia.  I was put on esomeprazole twice a day for 6  months then reduced to once daily.  It all worried me greatly which I think didn’t help.  Now I’m absolutely fine and just get a little post nasal drip and indigestion now and then.  Certain foods definitely made it worse - tomatoes, chocolate, fizzy drinks….. Also mints can make it worse so be careful with the Rennies.  You will find a solution I’m sure but it’s miserable and I hope your GP will come up with the care you deserve xx

I'd also say the peppermint tea may make it worse, it is okay for some people but not others, so be careful with that.

You're right.  A dietician told me that peppermint and alcohol relax the sphincter muscle making it easier for acid to go into the oesophagus. I've cut both out and it's helped

Hi everyone

Thanks so much for your replies, I think I have a Hiatus hernia but guess only a camera will determine that so will have to see what Gp says hopefully they will ring today.

I will stop the peppermint tea

All rennies and gaviscon are mint flavour.

Thanks again.

The gaviscon mint is fine as it is just flavouring. But you can also get gaviscon advance in aniseed flavour, although it's disgusting well, to me).

Yes the mint flavouring doesnt count. I have a hernia too. Im careful about my position for eating and afterwards when my stomach has food in. You just have to adjust your lifestyle a bit. Ive had to make a few changes.

I empathise.  I've had a similar experience.  This statement about the NHS being free at the point of contact is nonsense now as most of us can't contact them. I've had 40 years of gastric problems. First of all don't Google.  I've stopped. It's okay for minor straight forward things. Anything else is likely to be confusing. I would definitely make a temporary plan while you wait, change your eating routine and diet and see if it gives some relief. Holding off food at least 3 hours before bed makes a difference,  also avoiding gassy drinks. Avoid over filling your stomach as its likely to go back the wrong way. And try to sleep slightly propped up.  You're not losing weight? Can swallow okay?
