Worried…..womb lining getting thicker
« on: January 17, 2024, 10:18:52 AM »

So I’m post menopausal, been taking HRT for a few years and have experienced intermittent bleeding.

I was sent for an internal ultrasound December 2022 which showed womb lining 6.5mm then had hysteroscopy, all was fine. My GP said to continue with the HRT.

I’ve still been getting intermittent bleeding and I was sent for another internal scan which I had yesterday and my lining is now 9mm.

The radiologist said she’ll make a referral for me to the gynaecology department.

Im really worried and have stopped the gel but I’m wondering if I should continue taking the progesterone tablet as I understand this thins the lining? I can’t get to speak to my GP for another 2 weeks

How long is the appt likely to take?  MayB ring the Dept to find out?  Hopefully some1 will be along who has been through this.  The hormones probably aren't enough to cleanse the womb sufficiently.

Hi the first advice would be to either change your progesterone or change the dose.

https://thebms.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/14-BMS-TfC-Progestogens-and-endometrial-protection-01H.pdf   Look at page 3 of this document.

Which oestrogen are you taking and how much?

I have been through this….my lining went from 6mm to 9mm to 11mm. I had all the tests and nothing was found to worry about.

Thank you both for replying.

@Dotty Are you still taking HRT? I’m on 5mg provera tablet daily and 2 pumps estrogel.

I was initially taking Utrogestan 100mg daily but it didn’t agree with me and was useless at controlling the bleeding. The Provera is slightly better.

Meno44.  I've just had an internal scan and to have been referred to gynae for a biopsy.  I had a hysteroscopy about a year and a half ago, and all was good.  I'm on patches and utrogestan 200mg vaginally.   My specialist and my GP agree that a coil would be good for me.  One to stop the bleeding and two to keep my lining in check.  Hopefully, I could get the biopsy and the coil fitted at the same time.  Just wondering ifvthats been a suggestion fir you ?

Meno44, I  too am in a similar situation to you. On HRT for many years and I'm postmenopausal. Womb lining 8mm picked up by ultrasound in December and not having a hysteroscopy/biopsy until January 31st(read my thread if it helps). Just wanted to say that I was on one pump oestrogel and  utrogestan (100mg). I stopped all HRT immediately...but that was my own choice  as I'm really scared now. You must do whatever feels right for you. Just wanted to offer my support

The coil has been suggested to me in the past but I really don’t want is as I had one fitted years ago and the pain and bleeding that came with it was horrible and it took so long for them to take it back out. I’m also quite sensitive to many of the progesterones, in particular the hormone they put in the mirena.

Hi Northengirl, I did read your post and you’ve really been having a rough time, why does it all take so long? I’m worried so for now I’m going to stop the gel until I can talk to my GP.

Quick Update:

I received a text from my GP today saying I’ve been referred to the gynaecology department and I should hear back by the end of this week for an appointment.

So far things are happening quickly, thank god !

I hope they're quicker for you than me, I think I'm under the slowest health trust in the country.
Good luck meno44

I'm still waiting to hear too.  I'm really not keen to have a coil.  I think I will have a chat with gynae to see if I have any other alternatives.  I can't take synthetic progesterone so I worry what if the coil makes me feel worse.  My mood is fairly stable now and don't want to muck about with things too much.  I hope we all find something that works x

Quick Update:

So I had my appointment today and saw a consultant in the gynaecology department.

She asked a few questions then said she could do the hysteroscopy today or I could come back , I told her to please go ahead today as I want this resolved ASAP.

She said if she has a look and everything looks ok then she could put a coil in as she thinks this will be the best way of keeping my lining thin. I agreed as I really want to continue with the HRT.

Well, this procedure did hurt quite a bit compared to my last one but there was no way I was coming back another day.

She said that to the naked eye the lining just looks a bit thick but normal so she put the coil in.

I’ll get the results in about 8-10 days, fingers crossed it’s all ok
