Starting HRT - How long was it before you…
« on: December 06, 2023, 08:14:55 AM »

When you started HRT, how long was it before you needed to increase your dose of oestrogen? (Either yourself or doc’s advice) and by how much? And how long did it take to kick in? Thanks in advance  :)

Hot flushes were the first things to go for me after about four weeks but my other symptoms didn’t disappear until I was on the right dose of oestrogen. Once I was on the right dose I began to improve after about 4-6 weeks.

I don't think there's a standard answer. It was about 2 years for me when my own supply reduced again. Flushes usually go within a couple of weeks but my anxiety and insomnia took 3 months. They normally review at 3 months because it can take this length of time to get the full effect.

My flushes disappeared after a couple of weeks of starting HRT (even on the low dose evorel 25 patch) but I needed an increase to alleviate my other symptoms. I increased my oestrogen at my 3 monthly review and noticed improvement after 3 or 4 weeks and haven’t looked back.
Defo a case of getting the level that works for you. Once you do that, you should feel stable..

So is it the case that your body adjusts to the extra oestrogen and then you need more to cover all your symptoms. Or does your body halt production of your own oestrogen slightly as you’re getting more coming in so you then need more?

I hope that makes sense!

I just always wondered why after a while women need an increase.

Your body does what it's going to do regardless of whether you take hrt or not and how much  it doesn't override your own system in the way a BCP does. Your own production wanes as you head towards meno but there can be huge spikes and troughs along the way. If you've been started on a low dose it may be that it isn't enough for you atm and you'll need more or might be that it hasn't had enough to work yet. Most people seem to start on 50mcg and that was the right dose for me. I'm now probably meno and have had to increase twice approx 2 years apart because of my own reduced production and return of symptoms. I appreciate how frustrating it is when you're desperate to feel better but increasing slowly really is the way to go. Symptoms of too much oestrogen are just as bad. What dose are you on?
