Local names for 'things'
« on: November 15, 2023, 11:47:25 AM »

Any1 know what a 'ginnel' might be ?

'troshle' any1 ?

Alley-way ?

I know that in England a swede is an orange, round vegetable but in Scotland they are called turnips: down here turnips are a different root veg altogether!

Haven't heard of a troshie but here in the NW a ginnwl is an alleyway between back to back terraces. Suedes and turnips are different root vegetables, not different names for the same thing. They both taste  :sick02:

Love it  ;D

I suspect that every area has its 'common' language because people didn't travel as often or as far unless droving from Wales or driving geese from Nottinghamshire.

Gully - ravine
Cob - annoyed (got a cob on) - scouse.
- small hairy horse whose main aim in life is to lean on your fences until they break (never again...)
- middle bit of maize, corn on the cob
- round lump of coal
