Tibolone
« on: November 07, 2023, 06:28:21 AM »

Hi

Just joined the forum today.   Recently swapped over from oestrogel and progesterone to Tibolone.    Is anyone else on this and if so how are you finding it?

Libido is an issue for me.  Tried testosterone but my levels went through the roof despite reducing to a tiny dose and painful acne came back.

Any members thoughts would be welcome!

Many thanks 😊

I tried tibolone a few years ago.  I was okay on it and it improved libido.   It seemed to make my joints ache and my eyes a big funny and I got bad acne for a while.  After 18 months it caused post menopause bleeding so I stopped it.  They said I could go back on it but the bleeding put me off.  The bleeding stopped when I stopped the tibolone and I was okay.   I was disappointed because it's easy to use .  I'm just using local hrt since then.

I tried tibolone and it was great, I loved it, but I was taken off it because although definitely post meno, I had a five day heavy bleed once a month on tibolone, so after 8 months I wasn't allowed it any more even though each month I was bleeding less and I wanted to wait and see if it stopped.
The other day I was reading the NICE guidance to GPs on prescribing HRT and it warns bleeding with tibolone is a common side effect that can lessen given time.

I've decided to ask for it again because it definitely made me feel better overall and no other HRT has been worth the side effects. I've tried a lot of them now, they are nothing short of brutal to mind, body and soul.

My only negative side effect on tibolone was that return of periods a couple of years after menopause, but there was no build up of lining in the womb, just heavy bleeding from an empty uterus, they scanned to check.

I got no spots or extra hair, didn't turn into a man at all unless you count feeling physically stronger :D

I'm waiting until after new year to switch though, because the first couple of months were only ok, the oestrogel works well and I don't want to be ill over the holidays if that is what happens when stopping oestrogel. I've not had it to stop before so I don't know that one.

When the benefits of tibolone kicked in last time, I felt so much better and stronger both mentally and physically just from taking one tablet a day. I'm looking forward to that simplicity again as well as getting rid of the life threatening side effects of progestogens.

How have you been finding it?

Not so great without it and just ovestin. Hot flushes won't go away, lack of energy, libido not too bad with the ovestin surprisingly.  I have never tried systemic hrt, what problems did you have?  If you kept having bleeding on tibolone, wouldn't this constantly need checking out?

Hi there

Can I ask what you mean by this?
I wasn't aware of life threatening side effects with progesterone and I'm taking utrogestan daily.  :o

I meant that progestogens make me suicidal, usually between day three and day five of taking it and the feeling doesn't wear off with time, I have to stop taking it and wait 5 days or more to feel better.
I've had to tell myself over and over all the reasons I must not kill myself, for the sake of my kids etc, every time I take progestogens, even utrogestan. It's a serious risk that simply doesn't exist if I stay away from them.
I'm a perfectly happy person on tibolone.

They couldn't see me due to the NHS shortages, so they had to stop giving me tibolone for a few months until they could scan me. Now they know it's ok for me to bleed on tibolone because they had a look and my lining was nice and thin, so I'm allowed it again.
With systemic HRT I have the progestogen problem of "low mood" as they euphemistically call it and the patches were ineffectual. Only oestrogel worked as it ought to and I'm not allowed that without a progestin.

For me tibolone is the no drama HRT, there are no mood problems at all, in fact I'd say it acts as well as an SSRI for lifting the mood. It  helps maintain the libido, bone strength, cardio health and whatever else I don't remember. I honestly don't know why it's not used more. Maybe because it's an anabolic steroid and they have a bad name when abused, but in proper doses it makes me feel stronger and younger again.
Except the bleeding, I haven't had a side effect that I haven't liked from tibolone. I had low expectations, maybe that helped me like it too.
