Hello, on 14th November (2 weeks away) I’m having hysteroscopy, biopsy, polypectomy and Mirena fitted, all in one go. Was told at my consultation 3 weeks ago to stop all HRT. I haven’t yet, because at that point I didn’t have the surgery date.

I got the date 2 weeks ago and was told someone would ring me about pre-assessment, and also to discuss when to stop HRT. I rang the hospital today as hadn’t heard anything. Was told by one of the nurses that I could stay on the Evorel 50, but needed to stop the Utrogestan as of now. When I asked why, I was told it’s due to the high risk of blood clots with oral progesterone. She also said someone would be in touch regarding pre-assessment.

On doing research, I can see that on the Balance website, the latest information is that there’s no risk of blood clots with Utrogestan. Having had to fight for HRT in the past, and put in formal complaints to my GP surgery about a doctor who was foul to me and was using outdated info regarding use of HRT, I’m very wary.

Any advice/suggestions, gratefully received. My own thought is to keep on HRT at least until I’ve spoken to the pre-assessment nurse.

I had a hysteroscopy and a polyp removed under GA. I didn’t stop my hrt, Oestrogel and Utrogestan. Nobody told me to and I wouldn’t have wanted to stop. I had a pre op and spoke to the consultant before the op. They knew I was on hrt and didn’t mention it.

Could you switch to using the utrogrstan vaginally until after the surgery?

Thank you. I’ve had the surgery before, and also spinal fusion surgery and both times I was on patches. Wasn’t even told to stop HRT. The only difference now is that I take Utrogestan but the research shows that the progestogen in Utrogestan isn’t a risk for clots.

Ask the nurse if you can have Heparin injections to take home with you? I have twice had GAs, never stopped HRT, not even for my hysterectomy for atypical hyperplasia. They just sent me home with anticoagulant injections to do myself. No big deal. My consultant told me that quite a few women come in for emergency surgery who have been taking HRT and this is what they do for them, so it's not out of ordinary. They can also give you surgical stockings, too. You're not going to be immobile after a hysteroscopy anyway. I've usually been back to normal within hours (had two with GA, five without).
