Menopause vs anxiety
« on: October 17, 2023, 07:43:59 AM »

I'm seeing my Dr on Friday about my meds but I'm wondering if menopause just exacerbates everything and I just need to suffer it?
I've had lots of support here and good advice but I'm just worn down feeling I'm in a fight that's never ending x

For sure menopause exacerbates anxiety in those already with a predisposition for it. And some who have never had anxiety find it starts in menopause. Either way you certainly don't need to just suffer with it. I started citalopram, an anti depressant for anxiety about 5 months before starting hrt and found I needed both to make a big difference. I still have low level anxiety so it is not a fix all like I'd hoped but I am working through options and tweaks at the moment. Also, I think some antidepressants can help the more physical memo symptoms like hot flushes, although I've no experience of taking them for that reason. Defo speak to your doctor as you may well benefit from a combination of both anxiety medication and hrt. All I'd say is try (or change) one thing at a time, rather than multiple things at once. That way you'll have a better idea of what is working and what isn't.

I couldn’t agree more with Penguin, Dawn.
I have suffered anxiety for as long as I can remember (even as a child). I would say at the start of peri I  sought help and started citalopram. It did help but as the menopause journey progressed I realised that a combination of AD and HRT was needed to balance things out.
You don’t need to suffer, that’s for sure. Talk it through with your GP and mention what ladies have shared on this forum (if you feel that will help/educate your GP) - sometimes that’s what’s required  :o
Let us know how you get on..

Dear penguin and songbird thank you so much for your support. I think my anti anxiety meds aren't right I'm on duloxetine. I am also on hrt and want to get the right balance and be happy x

Once the balance is just right for you, Dawn, I'm confident you'll feel 👌. It can take a wee bit of time and gentle tweaks to achieve that. Stay positive - you'll get there xx

I take Fluoxetine for anxiety and I’m also on HRT/testosterone. While it does nothing for the depression it does help with the dreadful anxiety. The HRT/testosterone sorts out the depression. You certainly have to tweak things and it can take a while to find your right balance, it has done for me, I think I’m finally on the right path. Hope you find yours too👍
