Do I need more progesterone? 😬
« on: August 18, 2024, 09:27:46 AM »

So, I posted a while ago about my Elleste trauma and going back onto Femoston conti 1/5mg.

Dr recommended that I settle back onto Femoston for a month and then get my progesterone level checked.

I have been back on the Femoston for 5 weeks and had blood for progesterone taken on Friday. I am still having trouble sleeping, night sweats, cravings, brain fog and low level anxiety (no where near as bad as Elleste).

Results have appeared on the app (today Sunday) and are 1nmol/L. I can ring the surgery tomorrow but I’m so curious to try and find out if this is a level that will need supplementing given I am in menopause. I’ve had pretty awful reactions to progesterone in the past so a little nervous about how the Dr will go about balancing everything.

When I switched to Elleste it was to increase my estrogen but I was sooo anxious.
It was suggested that the estrogen may have been causing the side effects.
Dr wanted to test progesterone to see if I needed that ‘topping up’.

That is a very low level of progesterone.  I stand to be corrected but I think you can only measure natural progesterone in blood tests, not synthetic progesterone.

Some of your symptoms sound like low oestrogen and some sound like low progesterone so perhaps you can add in a pump of oestrogen and some natural progesterone to help with mood and sleep.

If I remember rightly, Femoston has a high level of progesterone so you have some wiggle room with adding in some extra oestrogen.  Extra progesterone is no problem.

Why does your blood progesterone matter?

You are on a synthetic progestin.

Is that a qualified doctor?!

Also what on earth do they plan to do about the result?!

Good questions …….. I haven’t a clue! I’m really struggling to make any sort of sense of it all tbh.

Qualified as in my gp surgery’s menopause specialist but that could be the ‘attend a zoom meeting and get a certificate’ type of specialist😂🤷‍♀️

Hi

I can’t really comment on progesterone as  I don’t take it but I would like to know if I should take it.

I am Everol 50 oestrogen only as I have no womb but when I read or watch a lot of things it’s says everyone should have Progesterone is that true ??

What side effects did you have taking progesterone? Did it make your symptoms better or did you not notice any difference ?
Hope the dr advises you properly tomorrow
I think to have a proper menopause specialist you need to be referred to the clinic, like you said Gp’s do an on line course and then wing it xx

Some people feel better on progesterone, many don't.

It's only really "necessary" to protect the endometrium.

Available evidence shows that out of clinically measurable outcomes, women taking estrogen alone fare best in terms of breast, cardiovascular and metabolic health. The next best outcomes are with intermittent progestogen and the least favourable with continuous combined.

The negative effects of combined therapy are mitigated but not nullified by using micronised progesterone vs synthetic progestins.

If someone finds progesterone benefits certain symptoms such as sleep or mood, then it is reasonable for them to take it for quality of life even if endometrial protection is not required.

However if I were in the enviable position of it being a choice rather than a necessity, based on the available evidence I would only try it if I had specific symptoms I was hoping it would help, not because a bunch of people on social media are taking it.

Hello ladies.

I asked my Nurse Practitioner about the possible benefits of taking progesterone ( specifically Utrogestan) and she told me that I needed it for womb protection, it wasn't supposed to make me feel better. It would be a bonus if it did though eh ladies!

Take care everyone.

NCT all of those symptoms are classic low estrogen symptoms so it sounds like you need to get your estrogen up.

I don't think we know enough about body identical utrogestan yet. There are many who rave about it and find it has all kinds of health benefits outside endometrial protection.

Then there are some people who hold it responsible for everything bad about HRT. I don't know if we have the research yet.
