New here and worried
« on: September 26, 2023, 02:22:07 PM »

Hi all, thanks for all the fantastic information on here, it's so helpful and reassuring. I'm 54 and have been on continuous Oestrogel (2 pumps) and Utrogestan (1 tablet every night) since August 2022. I've had a couple of very light spells of spotting but nothing longer than a couple of days so hadn't bothered going to the GP.  This month though I've had two spells of quite heavy bleeding, almost like a period each time which has freaked me out. I am going for a transvaginal scan on Saturday under the 2 week referral and I'm starting to get anxious. I should explain that I've had extreme stress in the last 6 weeks as my Mum has had a totally unexpected lung cancer diagnosis, stage 4 and found in an area of bone, and she is a non smoker so I am sort of wondering if shock/upset/stress can cause bleeding? I know this is unlikely but I am scared I'm about to get a horrible cancer diagnosis too. I'm struggling to keep my rational head on, it's all been such a nightmare lately.

Hello ClaireT and welcome to the forum. I am so sorry to hear of your Mum's diagnosis. I agree that the bleeding could be caused by stress. The main thing is, you are going to have it checked out. I understand how horrid it is to wait to have the scan especially as you have so much going on right now.

Thank you Flossieteacake, you're right, at least I will know what is going on after the scan, or at least, that certain things are hopefully OK. 🤞

So sorry for your news about your Mum, what support is she getting?   :foryou:

Yes stress can cause hormonal upheaval.  Once you've had the scan you can settle into sorting out whether your own hormones have joined in which may upset replacement therapy.

A change of water can also bring on unexpected bleeds, as when I went abroad.  Each time  >:(.

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks CLKD, so far it's been biopsies, scans and awful news but she has been assigned a lung cancer nurse and we'll see the oncologist soon once they know from tests which chemo she can start. We know its not curable but as she feels OK at the moment, we are hoping the chemo can halt/shrink things so it's liveable with for as long as possible. It's mainly coping with the shock, she only had a routine chest xray because she'd had covid in March aged 80, and her gp spotted it. As a non smoker it was quite unexpected. I'm hoping mine is better news/something straightforward, I'm not sure I can take any more nasty shocks atm, thanks for responding x

However, if the chemo gives your Mum nasty side effects ........... hopefully the Nurse will be able to advise.  Make a list of queries with your Mum to take to the various appts.

Thanks, CLKD will do. We both have a number to ring for any questions we want to ask in between meetings too.

Update. Had my scan this morning, all fine. My lining was 5.1mm so just to be extra cautious she did a womb biopsy which was slightly pinchy, but no worse than a period cramp. She suggested I go on to the Mirena coil with Oestrogel and nearly booked me in there and then but I said I wanted to see my GP first. Thanks for the kind and helpful posts earlier in the week.

How's your Mum?  At least you know that the lining is 'within normal limits'.

She is doing OK, thank you.  Our appointment with the oncologist is on Wednesday, so we will find out when her chemo will start and if she can have immunotherapy. She's had her covid jab and her flu jab is booked.

Another update. Just heard from the hospital that there was insufficient tissue for testing from my biopsy, so I am booked in for a hysteroscopy on Thursday! I managed ok with the biopsy so am hoping that by taking Nurofen an hour beforehand I'll be ok the next time too. Not great that I'll be back to square one re the waiting for results, but never mind. Some slightly positive news re my Mum, she is one of the few who are eligible for tablet treatment for her lung cancer, so she won't have to start with immunotherapy and iv chemo for as long as the tablets keep things stable or even shrink her cancer. We have everything crossed as some people can stay on the tablets for over a year/18 months. Hopefully it will buy her a little more time. 🤞

Hi Clare
Don’t stress I had this happen I was however bleeding non  Stop for 4 months and had a biopsy the results were clear but I still needed  hyteroscopy to view my womb it was painful but bearable you have gas and air and great support from the nurses . I had thick womb and it was a hormonal inbalance and couldn’t kick into peri menopause so mirena was fitted . I am 53 at moment and that was three years ago . I have just joined here as the mirena doesn’t stop symptoms and I think my are starting 🙄 itching and low mood anxiety I believe are part of menopause 🙄You will be fine Thursday and the person doing the camera should hopefully give you some answers

Hi Paula,
Was the hysteroscopy much more painful than the biopsy? I managed ok with the biopsy but am wondering if it's a big step up in pain? Interesting to hear you had the Mirena, I think that may be their next suggestion although my bleeding is very intermittent and I think it was brought about by stress. Welcome to the forum and thank you for taking the time to reply, you will find people on here are so helpful and really want to reassure you, there is so much useful info to read up on too. It sounds as if you will be starting on some sort of oestrogen soon if you are experiencing symptoms. 🙂
