I've just been prescribed another oral tablet as the pessary didn't dissolve as I was too dry with atrophy, plus it caused cramps and burning.
Trying ibuprofen also as I've read it helps with thrush,  antimicrobial as well as  anti inflamatory.
Been taking it easy today as was feeling unwell too.

I was on holiday in Spain where you can buy flucozanle over counter and it is sold in packs of 4.  (Pessaries prescribed by GP prior to going away had failed).

The nurses and GP at my surgery seemed to believe one tablet would do the trick but this was not at all the case at all  hence I took matters into my own hands - taking more tablets.  keep positive if you can - it will pass!

Just out of interest can you remember or noted if was there an age limit on buying the fluconazole tablets in Spain ?  Buying the 150mg tablet here is between 16 and 60 and i've found that you get asked at the pharmacy.
Were your packs of 4 150mg each ?
I'm just wondering if something seemingly okay in Spain is not here. Thanks for any reply.

Thanks for all your replies ladies, very reassuring. Used the Canesten cream last night and it didn’t seem to burn. So that was a bonus. Plus, I slept well. Just got to wait for the cream to do its magic.  Fingers crossed. Hope everyone can have a fairly relaxing day.

Never needed in Spain so sorry don't know, have you googled it?

I lied at Boots last time and said I was 59 after an interagation in front of a queue!
My doctor has just prescribed another oral 150mg dose of fluconazole. What happens after 60? Are we not supposed to get thrush then?

Hope it works this time Midnight Shadow, to be honest I don't think 1 dose of any of these products work very often and you have to buy 2. Money making maybe at £13 a pop.

I'd wondered that myself.  Does anyone know the reasoning?  I'm over 60 (just) but wasn't questioned buying it OTC a few weeks ago at my local pharmacy where they know my age.

When i looked it up it was to do with your kidney function at over 60.

experience in Spain:
- no age restriction I could see in leaflet
- no questions asked at all - pharmacy didn’t bat an eyelid just asked me how many boxes of 4 I needed
- SO much cheaper (as is often case with medication in Spain compared to UK) approx €12 for 4 tablets

The over 60 rule in UK…thought about this a lot when I had the heavy overgrowth and did a lot of googling …found this…

“Appropriate studies performed to date have not demonstrated geriatric-specific problems that would limit the usefulness of fluconazole in the elderly. However, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related kidney problems, which may require an adjustment in the dose for patients receiving fluconazole.”

I don’t class myself as “elderly” or geriatric, I think it’s ultra ultra cautious quite rubbish.  I do understand they don’t want over 60s to diagnose self and to be treating right thing but a. When you have had a positive swab this doesn’t seem applicable and b. Surely this applies to every age???!

In short I could not see any red flags to taking the extra tablets (spaced out appropriately) to get rid of the thrush and tbh the way I was feeling mentally I thought it was worth it as just taking positive step made me feel better in myself.
Hope this is helpful
PS they were 150 mg tablets

Just an extra note - Could find no evidence that flucozanle damaged kidneys rather it may not be wise to take IF you have kidney condition

Yoh....Thanks for all that information LDP. Very informative and helpful.
Sounds like you've been proactive and more able to be so in Spain.
