Have you used sea sponges for a pessary
« on: June 20, 2023, 08:48:13 PM »

I've read that Jade and Pearl sea sponges can be used as a pessary.
Do you use these and if in UK where did you buy them.
Do they help your prolapse symptoms or did you find that they didn't help or dread of dreads, made things worse.
I would be grateful to hear feedback.  I have a prolapse that I have been managing conservately without treatment for a few years. I used a ring pessary but had to have it taken out after ulceration.
I have approached my prolapse with a view to managing it without surgery or repair and to be honest I am shocked at some of the posts I've read and feel so sorry for the pain and worry these poor people go through.

Just to reply.

I have a prolapse which i have been managing for six years now.   My GP says the next step is referral which i haven't taken yet and don't really intend to unless i really really have to.

I have never heard of the sea sponges that you mention but will look them up.  Are you using local oestrogens to help ? i find it makes some difference.

I've seen them online for sale and was considering trying one, the reviews were good. Had a silcone pessary years ago that lasted about 6 hours before I had to pull it out as couldn't pee.Local estrogen and physio sorted my prolaspe eventually.

I have tried them but they aggravated my VA.  Looking at the reviews on-line it seems some ladies have used the sea sponge tampons as they are softer than the ones specifically for prolapses, and have worked well for those ladies who have posted.  If you have VA it might be worth trying those first.  I am tempted to try them myself.   Stressnomore.co.uk sell them.

Thank you for the information on the sea sponges. I do use topical estrogen cream now and again and very sparingly and it does help.
As I write I'm sitting on an icepack (honestly) after spending a bit time in my garden. I will never learn!!
It is very comforting and would recommend it. A few icecubes in a freezer bag, a towel to sit on incase they melt and whack it outside of your underwear. Don't go for torture session, just relax and see if it helps 😊

Do you have to soak the sponge in anything first? As sponges tend to soak up moisture I'd be worried I'd end up drier inside and the VA would get worse.

When I used the sponge for the prolapse you had to soak it in water and then use a lubricant or moisturiser to insert, but I still found it aggravated my VA.  Looking at the ones for periods they seem to be a lot softer.  I can’t see anything about soaking them in water, I suppose because they would normally be used for soaking up bleeding.  I’m thinking if I tried them I would use some sort of moisturiser mixed with a little ovestin maybe.  I’m just thinking it might be helpful when going for long walks or on those days when the prolapse feels heavy, but I will do some more research, although I’m still having a flare up of VA, so won’t be experimenting with them until my VA settles down!

I'm still struggling with my flare up too Haydo, can't believe it's lasted this long.
