Do Utrogestan side effects ease over time?
« on: February 28, 2023, 07:02:43 PM »

Has anyone had very rough side effects when starting sequential HRT in regards to Utrogestan and continued to try it and the side effects lessened over time? Or if you get these side effects will you always get them?

I’m coming to the end of my 12 days taking Utrogestan and it’s been really awful with physical and emotional/ mental side effects. I’m speaking with my Dr on Friday and I know she will suggest the coil or contraceptive pill and I’m not at all keen on either.

So I’m wondering if the side effects lessen over time then I should persevere, or what other options there are? Can I take 100mg for days 17-28 instead of 200mg?

I’m 45 perimenopause. Severe PMS/ PMDD. And started on sequential HRT with Evorel patch for the esteogen and 200mg Utrogestan days 17-28.

I’ve been searching for an
answer to this but can’t find one. Has anyone started with very bad physical/ mental/ emotional side effects (that makes them unable to function) from 200mg Utrogestan taken sequentially in perimenopause, and persevered and those side effects eased over time? Or is it if you get those side effects you always get them? Xx

Hello to you,

I can only say of my own experiences. I only began hrt in September, on estradot 50 and utrogestan. Personally I did not get on well with it, my mood swings have always been very cyclical, and seemed worse with the utrogestan. I tried for only 2 months before deciding to go for the mirena coil instead, and after it took a few weeks to settle, this has been a good thing for me.

I am sure that maybe I panicked a bit, I seemed to be in a right constant upheaval physically and emotionally, maybe I did not give myself enough time to let things settle, but I can only give you my personal experience.
There are many women out there who take utrogestan as part of their own hrt regime and it seems to work very well for them.
I do hope someone can come along with a more positive response.

I know we are all highly individual, what works for one may not for another, and there does seem to be some tweaking needed at times as things alter.

Hope someone can step in and reassure you

Hugs

Utrogestan never got any better for me. There are lots of threads on the subject, if you use the search box at the top x

Utrogestan has always been the best of a bad bunch for me. I use it because I need to if I want to remain on HRT and from my own research it appears to be the safest option if you intend staying on HRT long term (unless of course you're happy with the Mirena coil but my GP isn't happy fitting one in over 65s anyway!).

I use it vaginally. The first few days are the worst. After that it's bearable but I'm always glad when the course is over and done with. I definitely wouldn't want to use it every day (I get spotty and grumpy like I always did with my own progesterone) so have had to remain on a cycle which does come with its own risks so you have to work out your own risk:benefit ratio!

For many of us it's never easy is it?

Hi,

Yes, I hated Utrogestan to begin with, I mainly suffered with severe fatigue, I can't honestly remember if I had any other side effects.

I was debating taking half dose for 23/28 nights instead of the two tablets for 14 nights but didn't get to that point.

I now love this part of my monthly regime, I sleep really well, feel calmer and any anxiety is also lessened.

I've had a little look back at my posts on here and it looks like I really struggled with it initially and it took a good six months to improve (obvs not what you want to hear!) but yes, I have done a complete u turn  :)

HTH,

I too am having a bumpy ride mood wise with the sequential  Utrogestan  200mg for 12 days. Am now 3 months in, and  trying vaginally this time, but can already feel the side effects starting to build by day 5. Mood is the least tolerable of these (a delicious mixture of tearful, flat and angry), but also getting the bloating /soreness and cystic acne.
At 49 I was very nearly done with periods (about 10 month gaps), and the 50mg Evorel patch is great. Only tried a month on the Evorel Conti patch - thought I was losing my mind - and Utrogestan  is better but not better enough.
Wondering whether the 100mg Utrogestan continuously would be easier to tolerate than that sequential regime (assuming my GP will agree to it - they're a stickler for the dosage algorithm).
What have people found in terms of mood changes when they went to continuous?

How much oestrogen are you on? According to Newson but not the manufacturer you can halve the dose if using it vaginally probably safe for low/medium oestrogen but if on a high dose you may want an occasional scan to make sure it isn't building up. Or try 200mg for 10 days. I don't get mood problems but it makes me dopey.
