Heart flutters, Utrogestan
« on: April 04, 2023, 12:58:03 PM »

Hi
My worst symptoms has always been anxiety, palpitations and insomnia. When I was on everol conti they all disappeared. However stupidly I stopped HRT and they all came back. Had to wait to get heart checked out all good so went back on HRT after 8 months of horrendous symptoms, but chose gel and utrogestan for help with sleep. That was 2 years ago and ended up on 100 patch and 100 utro everything manageable but not gone completely and palpitations could be bad. Just gone to 75 patch and 2 utro due to thickened lining and anxiety is almost gone but gentle heart flutters are constant when resting.

So question is has anyone found utro cause palpitations?

Am tempted to go back to Evoril conti to see if it makes a difference but frightened I will not be able to sleep.

Any ideas ladies? :)

Oh and just to say I have low heart rate ( maybe the calming effect of utro is making it worse?) so I can’t have beta blockers.

Have you had a recent scan?

U could try the other regime to see if it helps if your GP will change you over.

Hi Hopeful,

I'm sorry to hear of the issues you're experiencing. I take utrogestan 100mg 25 days a month and it doesn't give me palpitations.

I did have an irregular heartbeat a few years back and it turned out I was slightly anaemic but iron tablets have resolved both issues.

I'm not sure if Utrogestan causes a lower heart rate but it does seem to affect the respiratory system. Lots of things can cause palpitations so I wouldn't assume it is the utrogestan.

Maybe if the Everol Conti suited you you could try switching back to that. I think its fairly common to have to experiment with different types and doses of HRT before you find the right one. Have you tried the Mirena coil for your progesterone?

I hope I have been a bit of help and that you find a solution, I'm sure some more knowledgeable ladies will be along soon. x

Hi Hopeful,

I have had bouts of palpatations throughout peri-menopause both before and during HRT. It was really bad pre-christmas for a couple of months along with anxiety. I was on 4 pumps of Oestrogel and 14 days of 100mg Utrogestan. My research indicated it could be due to too much or too little oestrogen so I plumped for one and dropped to 3 pumps. Not sure if it was pure co-incidence but palpatations (& anxiety) disappeared. Have had a re-occurance of anxiety/jitters this past couple of weeks (for no apparent reason) but palpatations have been nowhere near like they were like last time (so far - fingers crossed).

My personal opinion (caveat I am not a medic!) is that there are several factors at play and it is trying to getting the balance right with both oestrogen and progesterone supplements against your own levels. I think when your own body makes a step change (which mine seems to do every few months ::) ) it throws out the HRT regime so its all a bit of trial and error trying to tweak the balance between the 2 hormones. Maybe try 50 patch?

Hopefully someone else will comment with more helpful and informed advice.

I wish you well x

Utrogestan always gives me palpitations, little ectopic beats! It makes me feel wired up not sedated.  :-\
