Whats going to work for me?
« on: March 16, 2023, 02:45:25 PM »

Hello all. I am 50yrs old and started Evorel 50/Conti at the start of last year. My symptoms prior to starting HRT were insomnia, increased anxiety, palpitations, achy joints, low mood and very quick weight gain. The HRT made some difference to the achy joints, skin and hair, but not much else.

After 6 months, I noticed I was getting terrible reflux and digestion issues, so I went cold turkey and came off HRT completely. That was 3 months ago. Since then the achy joints have returned with a vengeance, my anxiety is horrendous and I still have all the other initial symptoms. I feel stuck. I obviously need some kind of HRT, but I just don't know if I can cope with the reflux and digestive issues again. My GP is really not that clued up in relation to HRT and I feel they are just throwing anything at me to try and reduce my symptoms. I know I need to go back to my GP. What should I be asking/telling them? They always ask what I think would work???? I have no idea!  I should also add I have had a long history of eating disorders and am mindful that I am at risk of osteoporosis as a result, so that's another reason for being on HRT.

Hello.  As oestrogen levels drop many symptoms may happen: dry skin; inside and out.  Reflux/hiatus hearing because musles become lax = aches and pains.

Did the regime help any of your symptoms?  I use Milk of Magnesia when necessary and have Omeparzolol to ease that reflux irritating clearing of throat cough.  Fortunately not over night!

Join the club with EDs!  Little and often for me, so that my body doesn't get suddenly hungry and dip = nausea which prevents me eating.  When well bananas and other slow release foods help, including dried fruits and nuts.  Graze girl, graze ;-)

HRT can help bone health and protects the heart.  Regular exercise i.e. walking 10 mins 3 times a week initially [note to self  ::)] as well as hoovering .......

Let us know how you get on.  Some find that keeping a mood/food/symptom diary is useful.

Thank you for your response. I will definitely give the keeping of a food journal a try for the digestive issues. If I’m honest I feel throughly fed up with always feeling ‘meh’ . So I need to do something. Whether that needs to be HRT I don’t know.

You may like to have a look on the Home page as there is a link to all the different HRT preparations. It can take time to find the right HRT and hopefully you will find one that does not cause the digestive issues.

You could also ask to be referred to an NHS menopause clinic if you feel your GP is not knowledgeable enough in menopause. Do not worry, there are many options yet to try.

Unfortunately it's impossible to know what will suit you, it really is a case of try and see. Given that you have digestive issues it would be better to stick to transdermal though so patch, gel or spray. If you have utrogeston for the progestin it can be taken vaginally off licence. Usually if you have problems it's the progestin so you could try something with a different type.

Hey how long after stopping hrt did you reflux take to get better? I've just stopped after 8 weeks as had awful side affects but the reglux is still really bad I've only been off it for 5 days
Thanks
