Feeling rather incompetent in the work place
« on: February 28, 2023, 07:33:26 PM »

Does anyone feel that they are just not as capable and confident in the work place, than younger colleagues? This is how I feel.

My brain isn’t as sharp and little things frustrate me.

I’m a TA in a small SEN school and feel that I’m slowing down a lot. It takes me ages to do anything relating to technology and my maths ( I don’t mean basis math) is shocking!

I feel I may get sussed out before long and get the boot!

Since hitting my late 50s I feel the same, never before had I felt like this but aging is what it is and your younger colleagues will know all about it soon enough. I just work for my OHs company and yesterday I was doing the simplest of tasks, filing and I was actually struggling to do things alphabetically,so no,you're not alone x

Yes basically. Luckily I work in a job where it doesn’t matter as I can do stuff in my own time. I have a PhD and used to be in a professional role so yes I feel very thick these days. My job now is far simpler.

I’m hoping I will get some mental sharpness back at some stage. Although I’ve never been the same since having kids so not holding out too much hope.

Have you explained to your work that you are struggling in this area? Might help.

As pp says, never mind your younger colleagues (presume female!) ….they will get older one say too!

When was the last time you had CPD? Technology is changing all the time and you should have training to keep you up to date.
If you are unsure or haven't been properly shown how to do something then you won't feel confident. Ask your line manager for some training on the next inset day, you might be surprised how many others sign up for it too.

I definitely know where you're coming from  :(

I simply can't retain information in the same way and feel like my brain has gone rusty!

Could you have a word with someone and explain, at least they will have an understanding of what you are going through?

Maybe that would lessen the panic feelings you get that you are going to be "found out " and sacked at any moment (believe me, I know what its like!)

You're not alone  :)

Thanks all.
In my defence, I juggle many balls at once, but that’s my choice. I manage my own workload, but would prioritise any urgent tasks.

Many colleagues don’t do my job and I not their job, but doesn’t help me comparing!
