Hi , I can’t get Utrogestan tablets because of supply issues, my pharmacist recommended the vaginal pessary as an option, but when I emailed the GP I got a reply back saying that the suggested pessaries would not be suitable. Would anyone know why?- or can anyone suggest another alternative?
I’m 59 been on HRT since I was 37 due to removal of my pituitary ( no hormones at all )

Yes , I’m on 1 tablet continuously.

So your doctor rejected the alternative without giving you a good reason?   I would definitely want to know why they objected to it. Perhaps they knew nothing about said alternative and couldn't be bothered to find out.

What was the alternative?   It sounds like it could have been Cyclogest in which case there is no reason why that would not be a good alternative.   It's a vaginal wax pessary that can be cut into tolerable doses. 

I would ask the pharmacy for the alternatives and make my own decision.

They’ve probably rejected it as the vaginal pessaries are 200mg not 100mg.

An alternative is Provera x

I managed to get myself an appointment with a brilliant prescribing nurse, she saw no reason I couldn’t have the Cyclogest and then consulted a GP that could also see no reason why I couldn’t have them . Picking them up tomorrow . Thanks

according to besins utrogestan will be available for pharmacies to order next week x

So it was Cyclogest.   

I'm pleased you now have a solution and chances are, you will prefer it to Utrogestan.   I haven't tried it but apparently it is better tolerated than Utrogestan, particularly in 50mg doses.

Hello Rachatkinson  and welcome to the forum.

I am pleased that you have sorted out your problem.

I have been using Cyclogest for some time and I am fine with it. My regime is 50mcg alternate nights so I either cut a 100mcg pessary in half or a 200mcg pessary into quarters (though that can be a bit fiddly).
I am with Newson Health Clinic and was told that these pessaries are usually used for infertility treatment which may explain why your doctor was unfamiliar with them.
