Migraine and HRT -advice/recommendations please
« on: February 22, 2023, 12:00:12 PM »

Hello,

I've finally managed to get an appointment tomorrow with the Nurse Practitioner at my drs to discuss HRT options.

My only concern is I suffer with chronic migraine and wonder the effect on these from HRT.

From research I've done, it would seem patches or gel is the better option. I completely understand each person is different, however, I would love your opinions/recommendations/advice please so that I can attend the appointment fully informed.

Thank you so much xx

As Pippa said, transdermal is definitely the preferred option for those who suffer with migraines.  I prefer gel.

Also, it's best to avoid a cycle if you can because the hormonal instability caused by the stop/start with progesterone makes migraines worse.  Hormone stability is key for the avoidance of migraines.

Have you ever researched migraine preventative medication?   I find amitriptyline to be very effective.

Good luck with your appointment and please let us know how you get on.

Hi,

I suffer with migraines and have been prescribed Sumatriptan by my GP which I take at the onset and it pretty much works wonders for me.

When I started on oral HRT my headaches and migraines were definitely more frequent.

I switched to Oestrogel and oral Utrogestan (14 nights out of 28) about 2 years ago and both my headaches and migraines are now far less frequent, so for me, the HRT I am currently taking has helped and definitely not made matters worse.

HTH.
