Is it normal to feel terrible after reducing to half a patch?
« on: February 04, 2023, 10:36:52 AM »

Hi I’ve been on Everol Conti 50 for a week and was concerned I was having side effects to the progesteren (am know to be intolerant) as wasn’t feeling good so yesterday I reduced to a half patch as thought maybe I should start lower. I felt really terrible over night and this morning - anxious knot in stomach, nausea, shaky and had the worst night sleep, feeling v agitated. Could this be down to just reducing by half a patch and falling estrogen? Could that happen so fast and so severely? Or more likely to be side effects from the whole week of it building up? Ugh I feel in such a mess  :'( reminds me of how I’d feel earlier in peri.

Yep.  HRT can over-ride the bodies hormones which may well cause sudden severe effects.  I remember prior to each period feeling pretty similar to how you are this morning.  I knew it was hormones and that I would feel better once the bleed began .......... and would forget until the next month  >:(

Thank you so much for your reply. I feel so stupid now for lowering the dose I have ended up making myself feel much worse which was not the plan. I hope this passes soon as I’m finding it hard to tolerate. Any idea how long it might take to level out or should I put another full patch on instead?

Hi, could be either.

And yes changing oestrogen levels really can affect you that fast ! Symptoms can change from day to day for me….and hour to hour for that matter.  If you look how steeply in a normal cycle oestrogen falls before ovulation for example …. which sets off my migraines!

I would recommend either sticking with the 50 patch or the half a patch for a few weeks before making any judgements ….they say to give it three months before making decisions.

Are you post menopause (ie reasonably stable) or peri….therefore have to factor in your own hormone fluctuations ? If so it will take a few months to work out if you have overall improvement despite your own hormones going up and down as they do.

Oh sorry I see you are post meno reading properly. You still need to give it a few weeks at the very least. I found it took several weeks to get over side effects of oestrogen only patch alone for example

If you're not sure if it's the oestrogel or prog you could try a couple of months on a sequi regime.

I have been reducing my supplemental oestrogen patch and have been feeling awful, but more mildly and more manageable.

Not sure if this is what's happening but it seems likely to me, only a thought but maybe increase it and see if you start to feel better.  If so then it was the drop in the hormone.  At least that's how I'd see it, but I'm not medically trained.  I imagine you could increase a bit but still have it less than it was before you changed it.  So you're getting a gradual reduction.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks so much for the replies  :)

Feeling slightly better today. These hormones are powerful things! This is only after a week of taking the hrt, I worry how unpleasant it would be to come off it after a longer period of time when your body has got more used to it.

How often should you use the patch?  MayB alternate nights rather than every night?
