Cyclogest advice
« on: January 16, 2023, 07:52:29 PM »

I am extremely intolerant to Utrogestan. It made me very ill with extreme anxiety and suicidal thoughts. I have been given Cyclogest instead. Just wondering if anyone has used this successfully? Many thanks

Hi isn’t Cyclogest the same as Utrogestan except you use it vaginally ?

An alternative would be Provera.

Budder, I have some Cyclogest pessaries on standby but I've never actually needed to use them.   I believe they are better tolerated than Utrogestan and definitely more flexible because you can cut them into more tolerable doses ie 50mg.

I think the reason why so many women have problems with Utrogestan is the high 100mg dose.   I literally could not tolerate them at all because they kicked off my migraines but I don't even notice a 50mg progesterone dose.

What dose of Cyclogest do you have?   Are you using progesterone on a cycle or continuously?

They are 200mg on a cycle. It says 200mg each day for 14 days. I thought this was really high and so am even more worried

I have some cyclogest and was told to cut them into quarters using a hot knife, hopefully then the side effects will be bearable x

I'm sorry if I worried you but 200mg for 14 days is one heck of a lot of progesterone.   What dose of oestrogen are you taking?

I have a box of 200mg pessaries and I was planning to cut them into quarters but I haven't needed to use them.

What was the thinking behind this high Cyclogest dose?   Where you previously using 200mg Utrogestan vaginally?

I was taking 100mg Utrogestan vaginally but couldn’t even tolerate that. Do you think I should try 50mg ?
What are you using?

Budder, if you were taking 100mg Utrogestan vaginally before, I can't for the life of me think why you have been prescribed 200mg Cyclogest, particularly if you were unable to tolerate 100mg Utrogestan, it makes no sense whatsoever.

Personally, I would try taking 50mg vaginally and see how you get on.  How well it will work long term depends on how much oestrogen you take but you will not harm yourself by trialling 50mg for 14 days for one month just to see how well you tolerate lower 50mg dose.   If you find it works, you get a decent bleed and you tolerate that dose, you can then have a transvaginal scan in a few months to check your womb lining and make sure you are getting good clearance.

What dose of oestrogen are you taking?

This is just my personal opinion based on my own experience but I think that 100mg progesterone x 14 for that level of oestrogen is way over the top and obviously 200mg is even worse.  To be honest, I'm not surprised you felt terrible.

Do you know how well you absorb the patch and do you know your oestrogen blood levels?   I found the patch far too weak.

By the way, I'm using one pump of Oestrogel and 50mg progesterone gel every day on a continuous combined regime and it works well.

Can you keep us updated on how you get on with this pls?

I am intolerant too, have tried Utrogestan 4 x and Mirena coil twice - but not working.  I am going on 2 x mini pill next, reason being is that I used to be on this in my early 30s and was fine....worth a shot, but if that doesn't work I will be going on Cyclogest.

From when you stopped your last Utrogestan how long did it take for the symptoms to subside - I stopped Friday, having period today but feel awful, very very tired, crying and cant work...

Good luck, I do feel for you as I know how messed up it makes you feel...big hug. x

Emsie, I was taking 7 x 100mg Utrogestan vaginally every five weeks or so and it took me a good couple of weeks to get over the actual Utrogestan itself and the horrible bleeding which made me feel drained and ill and it used to trigger my migraines.

That type of regime became a complete no go for me but thankfully I'm 15 years post menopause now and found a low dose continuous combined regime that works and it's great to feel the same every day.

Hello Budder and welcome to the forum.

I have been using Cyclogest for about a year and I haven't had any problems with it.

My original prescription was for one 50mcg pessary used alternate nights, unfortunately they only come in 100mcg doses so this meant I had to cut them in half which wasn't a problem. For my most recent prescription I was told that there was a shortage of 100mcg so I was given 200mcg pessaries and asked to quarter them. All a bit fiddly but doable. I understand that they are designed for fertility treatment but can be used for HRT though this may be off licence.

I hope this helps you and take care.

Thank you Kathleen. Can I ask if you quarter them long ways (top to bottom) or the other way . Hope that makes sense

Hello again Budder

I find it easier to cut across the width of the  pessary rather than lengthwise from top to bottom. I suppose it's the way you would slice a sausage lol.

Cutting a 400mcg pessary into four slices is a bit fiddly and it was much easier to cut a 200mcg one into two pieces however needs must as they say!

I use a pair of sharp scissors but I see that someone has suggested using a hot knife so I may give that a try.

I hope this helps you and wishing you well.
