Side effects taking Utrogestan
« on: January 10, 2023, 01:04:16 PM »

Hi, I am new to all this, at 42 I have been put on HRT after a long battle and it has been a life changer, I am perfectly fine with the everyday Oestrogel then month 1 I took Utrogestan for 14 days (out of 28) but took it incorrectly and only took 1 x 100mg tablet orally and had no side effects. Month 2 I realised my error and took 2 x 100mg orally. On day 14 of taking it I suffered with stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea that lasted 4 days but thought I had food poisoning or a bug. Month 3 (this month) I had the exact same (stomach cramps, nausea and diarrhoea) on day 13 of taking Utrogestan which I now know is a side effect and not a coincidence.

I have a telephone GP appointment in 9 days time (before I'm due to take the tablets again) and concerned as it's not my usual GP so want to go armed with info and options of how other people have taken Utrogestan to eliminate these side effects as I'm not sure if the GP is well informed or not as I have spoken to some that have no clue (I went privately in the end to be prescribed HRT and then referred back in to the NHS).

I have been told that you can take them as a pessary vaginally so that the tablets don't pass through the liver and therefore can be softer on your stomach and some people take a lower dose for more days, I'm looking for some advice of people who have had the same symptoms and how they have changed the way they take Utrogestan to overcome it. TIA  :)

Taking it vaginally avoids the digestive issues, push it up as far as you can before you go to bed. It isn't licensed for vaginal use in the UK though it is in the rest of Europe so your gp may not be clued up. The manufacturer thinks the dose should be same so I'd suggest you stick to this unless you really can't tolerate it. The only time I tried 100mg vaginally I didn't bleed though perhaps I wouldn't have done anyway.
