Question re. Endoscopy
« on: December 27, 2022, 06:06:32 PM »

Ladies, just a little question before my endoscopy appointment tomorrow (which I am dreading).  I have been asked to bring a list of medications I take with me.  The only thing I have by prescription, is Ovestin cream.  Surely I don't need to mention this.  I know I am sounding absolutely thick, but hospitals really stress me out and I now feel I am overthinking everything.  Cant wait for this to be over.  Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.

You do not sound thick. Yes, you should mention it. It is always worth mentioning any medication we take just to ensure it is listed.

I can understand your anxiety about having the endoscopy. If this helps, when I had it I did not feel anything and barely remembered what happened due to the sedation. I am sure they will give you a nice cup of tea and a biscuit after and then it is all over.

Thanks Flossieteacake, I'll write it onto the list.  I'm not taking the sedation, just going to try and be brave and get it over and done with as quick as possible.  We have visitors coming for a meal and I have lots to do and the thought of the sedation and feeling a bit 'off' actually scared me more than the endoscopy itself.

I've had them without sedation. It's not too bad at all. The spray they use to numb the back of your throat does taste disgusting and it's a strange feeling at first as, because your throat is numb, it can feel as if you are unable to swallow but everything is working ok so dont worry. Just follow the instructions and it will all be over really quickly. I went straight back to work after mine. I wasn't hungry for a while though. Tummy did feel a bit 'pinchy' where the biopsy was taken. All fine by the next day though and  by then I was starving!

I hope you find out what the problem is. I'll be thinking of you

Well that's it done.  Not near as bad as I thought.  They weren't offering sedation today for anyone (obviously lack of staff to oversee) but managed just fine.  In and out in half an hour.  No hiatus hernia but some inflammation at the bottom of my gullet (oesophagitis) caused by reflux.  Nurse said Gaviscon Advance would be enough treatment and I have to make a follow up appointment with my doctor in the New Year.   Only concern now is that my original symptoms of palpitations were obviously not caused by a hiatus hernia like I had thought so still no further forward with those, although it may be that it is the reflux causing them.  I still get those on a daily basis.  Slight cramps now and again in tummy and I have a headache but nothing a paracetamol wont fix!

I am so pleased to hear all went well. It is good to hear you do not have a hiatus hernia. I would think the Gaviscon will make a big difference and also to try and avoid triggering food. Foods such as tomato, tomato sauces, onion and garlic can really trigger acid reflux. Hopefully the other symptoms will settle too.

Really pleased to hear that everything went well and you don't have a hiatus hernia. Palpitations can have many causes. Mine are usually stress related and not caused by my hiatus hernia or the reflux
